264 Win Mag vs 257 Weatherby Mag....

Hey guys, we get the "22-250 or .204" question at least 500 times a month around here so I though I would change things up a little and see how many small magnum speed freaks we have here... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

I' gonna draw either a mule deer tag or a pronghorn this year and thats as good a reason as any to buy a new rifle for the occasion in my book... I have it narrowed to either a 264 WM or a 257 weatherby and was wondering what opinions are out there on these two...I don't care what your opinion may be all is welcome..... I just don't want to hear anything about a 270 please.. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

I hear tell .257 W suffers from an "excessive freebore disease" and the 264wm has issues getting 140grs going fast accuratly without a proper slow powder.. Anybody care to shime in on these issues or any thing else I should know about? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-006.gif

The rifle in question will be either

a .257 700 CDL SF

or the 264 in a 700 Sendero...

What say you?????????? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused1.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused1.gif

I'd get a 7mm/08 in a Savage..

Just joking guy's /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gifI'm sure somebody will come along with something constuctive to say..

Very funny Dave... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

The 257 may have alot of free bore but mine shoots excelent. The deer and coyotes hit
with it so far don't seem to even notice how far out the bullets will seat.
Honestly mine shoots great, well under 2 inches at 200 yards.
Brass prices are a bit high, and mine does not seem to shoot the 120 grain ammo well.
The 100, 110, and 115 grain factory loaded stuff all seem to work very well. A handloaded
117 Sierra Pro-Hunter on top of 67.5 grains of IMR 7828 is what I have settled on as my
hunting load. I have never owned a 264 Win Mag but I like my 257 Weatherby.

I don't own a 257 Roy, but a couple friends do. Both are custom barreled jobs and shoot extremly well. I do own a pre '64 M70 in 264WM, and it had been deadly on prairie goats and whitetails at well past 400 yds. My rifle doesn't have much freebore, and I had pressure problems with IMR 4831 and 140 grain bullets at 1.5 grains under load manual max. I always shot 120 Sierra's in it over IMR 4350 with no problem, even at over published max.
Whitetails went down like they were struck by Thor's hammer /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shocked.gif whith any good hit! There are more good 6.5 bullets to choose from these days than when I was using that rifle. It's in such good shape, it's become pretty much of a "safe queen" now.
Another good thing about the 264, if you reload, and have trouble finding brass....just full length size 7mm Rem brass in your 264 die and you're good to go!

Flyrod, I would imagine that a 120 would be all I would ever need in the killing power department... The BC and SDs of the 6.5mm bullets are simply amazing...

Bigmo, is there any special recomendation you have as to handloading that cartrige? I will be looking to neck size to create headspace from the shoulder..will that be a problem with the rounded weatherby shoulder.. ?

Thanks for the feedback /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif

Hey, got your message..

Doyle don't you have some sort of weatherby in one of your safes..

I think I despise .270s almost as much as "undocumented imigrants" /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

Myths. Neither suffers from anything and both are excellent long range cartridges for deer. I've never killed an elk with either, but I suspect with the right bullet, either would do it.

Buy the rifle you like best, you won't notice any difference in the field on mule deer or pronghorn.........

just about the same powder capacity, but better bullets available in 6.5 cal. which won't amount to nothin till the range exceeds 500 yards.
RR

the 257 might be a little flatter shooting to 450 or so. however if you wanna wack something beyond 450 yards, the 264 is the way to go, it has a lot sleeker bullets at its disposal, however the 264 is the most frustrating caliber I have ever loaded for, its been difficult to find speed and accuracy in the same load, I can find decent accuracy if I keep the 140's below 3100 but past that I haven't been getting the accuracy I want. don't overlook the 7mag its chambered in a lot more choices of rifles.

BC and SDs of 6.5 hard to beat i have a model 70 264 with no complaints at all with the 129sst wack and stackem Ron

You should seriously consider the 7 Mag, very user friendly.

120g Tripple shocks at 3550-3600; R#22
140g 3250 IMR 4350
150 3150 IMR 4350
154 3200+ R#25
160-162g 3000+ R#25

These were the speeds that I got extreme accuracy with out of my 700's.

I Have had two custom 257 Wea and one Model 70 in 264.

Ackleyman, whats your thoughts on the 257 and the 264? Didn't you say once you had a custom reamer made for the 257? Something about the freebore in the normal weatherby..

Also can I make brass for a 257 W out of 264wm brass? They want like $1.20 a piece for those things..

I have 100 rounds of new in the bag WW .264 Mag brass someone can take off me of a mimimum bid of $50 for the bag. High bidder in a week to think about it then it gets them shipped to the winner by me and I am paying the postage. Someone really outta get it.

I own both guns 2 257's and 3 264's I have shot elk from 50 to 400 yards with both guns, I love them both. I have never had one run off from either gun, but the 264 just seems to drop them in their tracks everytime.

I have had to track them a few yards with the 257 though. But the 264 just has more knock down IMO on elk I know is all about where you shoot them, but I have taken many elk with both guns and the 264 just works.
