264 Win Mag vs 257 Weatherby Mag....

Thanks Chris... What brass are you using in the 257WM? I think thats the way I'm headed as drawing an Elk tag in NV is a once in a lifetime ordeal (unless your rich)...lol But there are plenty of pronghorns and mulie's around...

Still wondering if forming brass from a 7mm mag or the 264WM is a coherent idea...lol

If you read my tagline, I would be willing to bet you see that I like my 257.. coues deer at 571 yards... Not to mention, I killed coyotes, fox, and a bob cat with it before the season. It is lucky /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

All my brass is stamped 257 Weatherby.
I have some Federal from an old stock pile of of
discontinued Federal Premiums and I have some
Weatherby(Norma) that I bought loaded when
I first got the rifle.
The factory Weatherby seems to be holding the primers
better than the Federal.
I am on my 3rd reloading and everything is still looking
very good. I neck size the brass and triming is very marginal.
I think you'll like the 257 if you decide to go that way.

I'd get a 7mm/08 in a Savage..

Dave Allen,
Seriously...Do you own a Savage, in 7mm08? If so, I'd like to hear about its' accuracy, range, etc. So as NOT to hijack this thread, you can e-mail or PM me, if you like.

Good hunting, Bowhunter57

I just got the cdl sf in 257 weatherby. Haven't gotten to shoot it yet but it is one beautiful rifle. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif

It is easy to make 257W cases from 264. Just run them thru your FL sizer and load. The necks will be slightly short but it doesn't matter. The 264 cases have several grains less capacity than Weatherby 257 cases so start low on loads and work up. Max velocities will end up about the same with either case. I have not done it but 7mm cases should work the same as 264.

Both are excellent cartridges, but my choice is the 257 WBM for mid ranges on deer size game. The free bore has not been an issue to date with my rifles. I use IMR7828 in Norma brass and have some Rem 7mm WBM brass I form to either 257 or 270 WBM brass.
