270 coyote rounds - 90gr Speer or Sierra?

Just curious which 90 gr hollow point is better or if it is like comparing apples to apples? I am about to start load development for the 270 to back up my 223 and 22-250 as well as make a real nice pop on some coyotes this year. It's good to have options. Any info would be much appreciated.

I've loaded the Sierra's but not shot any coyotes with them yet. I was jacking around shooting some out of date canned food and it was not near as explosive as the smaller calibers. Not much of an indicator but I would guess it means it would hold together better than the lighter varmint bullets. Mine used to shot the 100 grain core-lokts real well but it looks like they quit making them.

I'd like to try it out this winter and see what it does to one.

I used to shoot the factory loaded 100 gr core lokt out of my savage very accurately and they did terrible things to coyotes lol. The first coyote I ever shot was with 100 gr core lokt and I made a terrible shot due to nerves and making a belly crawl stalk on it down a ditch bank. Got within 80 yds and ended up hammering it through the ribs...turned out to be a messy bang flop. I have read the the 90 gr can be fur friendly or can be an absolute nightmare on coyotes. I kinda wanna work up a nightmare load just because hah.

I have never run the 90s but the 110 gr Vmax is a pretty dang devastating coyote bullet. I have a load for them for the same reason, backing up my 223 and 22-250.

I need to try some of those too. I saw them on sale at scheels the other day for $19.99 a box and forgot to grab some before I left. Might have to go back this weekend and check. I bet it's one he!! Of a back up round hah!

Now that's results! Lol. They seem to shoot pretty accurate?

You hear people talk about cutting a coyote in half and the 110s are as close as I have come. The main reason I load them is under crappy conditions they do better than the lighter 22 cals. I'm pushing mine with H4895.

Do you know how fast you are running them?

Nope never shot them over a chronograph. It would be interesting though, it's a pretty stout load that I worked up to with no pressure signs.

If I were loading a .270 for what you want my first choice would be the Sierra 110 SPT. I have and still shoot a .25-06 for varmint hunting. One of the best bullets I ever shot was the Sierra 87 gr SPT, the 110 gr .270 would be pretty close.

Thanks for the info! I'm not very familiar with the 6.8 platform, but what kinda performance do you get out of the 90s as far as fps, accuracy, etc. Thanks again!

We have shot thousands of the sierra 90g HP with IMR 3031, the velocity is in the 3500 fps area. This powder has proved to be exceptional with Remington 700's producing very tiny groups that you would think would be more like a benchrest rifle.

Sorry, I can not offer any help with the 90g Speer TNT.

If you are so inclined, the 110g V max(and HP)are very accurate with loads of 58g of Win 760(fed 210) and 57g of R#17(fed 215). Also the 110g Sierra Game king with the same loads shoots very small groups. Velocity of these loads are in the 3300-3400 fps with the 110g, and please back off a couple of grains and work up to my loads.

It is not an understatement that the 270 loves the 90g and 110g bullet weights.

I shoot the 110g tipped triple shock for deer, with the same loads and bullet impact never changes from the varmint load, 110g.

I will warn you that you will just about shoot a coyote in half with all these loads.

Speer 100gr tnt bullet is great for blowing big holes in things only bullet I've ever used on a coyote that I could see clear through the coyote.
