Guys, has anyone tried using 270. Win brass fire forming it for a 280 ai? In theory it should work, size to .284 ,load and shoot. Fire formed 280 ai.. Am I missing anything?

Size them then trim them to length.

270 win case length is 2.540
280 ai length is 2.525.

Other than that have fun. Will work just fine.

I wouldn't try that... the .280 shoulder is .050" further forward than where the .270 shoulder is. It was designed that way to eliminate chambering the round in .270 rifles.

I don't think there is any way you miss case head separation every time, trying to stretch that shoulder forward fifty thousandths of an inch. At bare minimum you are going to have paper thin brass just waiting to fail just forward of the case head.

But I have been wrong before!

Shoulders are blown forward when AI forming anyways. The 270 brass should be just fine. I can't see how moving the shoulder forward that bit would devastate brass as instantaneous as stated. Nor do I see any worry of thinning to a point of issue. But I have also been wrong before.

But I'd opt for some good 280 brass like Norma/Nosler. Or some 30-06 Lapua brass.

In this case, run with it. I think you'll be fine.

If there is any doubt just create a false shoulder on the 270 brass for fire forming. That will allow the shoulder to move forward with no case stretch when fired.

You could neck the .270 brass up to .30 first, and then neck back down to .284 but using the "false shoulder" as mentioned above. You have to keep headspace to a minimum.

Blowing out SAAMI .280 cases to .280 AI is not the same as blowing .270 Win out to .280 Rem. You've got a headspace issue if you simply neck .270 up to .280, whereas you do NOT have a headspace issue when you fire a SAAMI .280 in a .280 AI chamber.

Another technique you might try is necking the .270 brass up and seating a bullet long enough to jam the lands hard for fireforming. That should keep case head up next to the bolt face where it belongs. I've never done it that way but I can't imagine why it would not work.
