270 for coyotes?

222shooter

I am thinking of using my 270 for yotes this winter and let my son use my 222. I don't have another small calibre rifle.

I don't reload 270, but what bullets/ammo do you fellas recomend?

What about the Rem. 115grain managed recoil ammo?

I don't want to damage the fur too much if I can help it.

Thank you

Rich

I've used 90grn hollow points on ground hogs with good results. The results being one messed up ground hog.I would use a heavier bullet designed for large game. They are designed to hold together.Meaning small hole in,slightly larger hole out.

it will turn his lights out but will prob skin him on the way through. I have shot them with big game bullets and if they hit bone it takes bone out the other side through a big hole. I have shot them with the 90 grain HP loads and it made a tiny red spot going in the front of the chest and no exit. Canst say what it will do for you. Just my experience with the 270 and coyotes.

All the coyotes that I have shot have been with my .270 Win. Between my dad and I we have .22-250 and 6mms, but the .270 Win was a gift from my dad and it's my go to rifle and I just plain like shooting it.

I've taken them down with 130 gr Remington Core-Lokts and 130 gr ballistic tips. All yotes shot behind the shoulder with minimal damage, except one yote that was shot in the neck with a BT got pretty "wrecked".

One thing is for sure, it puts them down with authority. Big game bullets will go ahead and punch on through, but I could see where if you hit significant bone you're going to have major damage. Great practice for you with your big game rifle to boot.

Gah, I got the itch bad now to go out, except I just moved and am not around my normal stomping grounds. Any good places in the Dallas/FW area? I've been researching the LBJ grasslands. It's shotgun only though, which would be cool actually.

222shooter, I really don't think the load or type of bullet is going to help that much with a 270. I used a 270 when I hunted in Mexico, it killed the heck out of the coyotes but it was never pretty. I remember I shot one coming stright in, we went out to get the tail ( proff of kill back in the old days ) and could not find the tail, the 270 made it go away. The coyote had a bloody stump but no tail, we looked everywhere and never found it. Bring a shotgun, you take the close ones and let the boy take the long ones lol....Good Luck

I have shot a number of coyotes with the a 270. Great long range round. I have generally used 130 Ballistic Tips. The .270 will flatten coyotes at long range. As long as you don't shoot the coyotes in the guts damage should be minimized. Excellent round for windy conditions. You may want to get Remington's 100 grain PSP's. I have 3 boxes that I would like to try on them yotes.

Thanks to all of you for your input. Sounds like fur damage will be likey unless I hit the right spot.... Which is unlikley. I think I'll take it or a shotgun anyway because I'd like to give my boy some rifle experiance. He's been lugging the shotgun for a year now.

Maybe we'll get doubles. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif
