.270 for elk?

As an owner of both a .270 and a .35 Whelen, I have taken both elk hunting with confidence in the cartridges and bullets and my own abilities, but have yet to shoot one.

If you are a bit nervous about the .270 being on the small side, you can always go slightly up to the .280, which will allow the use of 160 and 175 grain bullets. There will probably be only a small difference in performance, however, the high sectional density of the 175's is a nice 'security blanket'. If I were to start over that is what I would choose.
