270 vs 30-06

Of the two you have listed, and if you hand load, then the .30 caliber will give you a bunch of choices in bullets, for versatility. If you don't hand load, then both are so close in performance, with factory ammo, then there really isn't a choice here.

Either of your choices will work great with nothing lost going either way. They are both proven winners for deer, antelope, and elk.

If limited to just deer and antelope, I prefer the 6.5 MM bore diameter to the others, with the 6.5X284 and the 264 Win Mag getting lots of field time. I also like the 6.5X55 Swede. For something soft skinned but a bit bigger like elk, I especially like the 7MM Mag with ~160 grain bullets.

But again, either of your two choices are great options.
 
The .270 would be a great choice.

The tried and true 130 grain bullet for deer and antelope sized game and the 150 grain for elk sized game.

Nothing wrong with an ought six. I just like the .270 better for what you asked.
 
I own a 280 Rem and a 280 AI, but for some reason they both get overlooked regularly in deference to other cartridge choices when I pull something out of a gun safe. But that is just me.

Still, they are both great cartridges too. Lots of choices available that may vary by shooter location and hunting conditions - east versus west - for example. Even the old 30-30 has its place.
 
270 win, for no apparent reason I just don't like 30 cals. I have no idea why, just never have. I wouldn't feel undergunned with the 270 for anything in North America, except for the big bears.
 
.30-06 every time. More bullet selection and using comparable projectiles the .270 doesnt shoot that much flatter than the old -06.
 
.30-06 over a century of success. 55-220 grain. Ammo everywhere and affordable. I have taken everything from grouse to elk with the 30 cal. Whats not to like about it.
 
30-06 hands down. Wide selection of bullets up to 220 grain. Much better BC's with the long 180 grain bullets, less wind drift, more energy on target. You can even take a 30-06 to the long range steel or 1000 yard target range. Germán A. Salazar has proved it many times in competion. Google Rifleman's Journal.

270 is still a great hunting caliber, when used at most normal hunting ranges. Jack O'Connor proved that long ago.

The critter won't know the difference and you probably won't either if all else is equal. That said, my preference would be for the 270 for the purposes mentioned and part of that stems from great success with the 270 over 50+ years. I've taken a few moose and a grizzly with 160 NPs but with today's mono-metal bullets one could drop back in weight.
 
Really not possible to go wrong with either.

Perhaps you would look at the 06 as having a slight edge with elk because you go get up into the heavier bullet weigths 160-180 if you so chose. With that said, the 270 has been responsible for the sudden demise of many, many elk over the years, so how much of an edge would one have over the other? Not much.

Personally, I love the 06 and I am very confident with it. Often it occurs to me that confidence is the ultimate advantage.

Given the parameters you mentioned,.270 will do everything you need. How many bullet choices are needed for deer and antelope? 130 grn SST
Edited to add didn't see Elk thrown in there, one of the Barnes bullets in 150 grn should handle Elk.
