270 wsm as a long range build?

I need to build a new rifle since the AR15 is done. I always like gun projects.

I was thinking of building off a rem 700 action or a custom 700 action that is already blueprinted & squared. Stainless 26" or 27" custom barrel shilen, Pac-nor, ect and send the bolt/barrel off to Kampfeldcustom.com for some cool fluting. This is my first custom gun build what do you guys think? I need some input on rifle build options.

Thanks Anthony

Hi Anthony,

A 7WSM stomps the 270 WSM (and the 300WSM) in the long range dept, simply based on bullet selection. Look at the ballistics of both & you'll see.

You can swing the either in a short action too. Have your smith install a Wyatt's extended mag box and throat your custom tube to a c.o.a.l. that will feed from it.
I can reliably feed 180gr VLD rounds @ 2.910" from the Wyatt's box in my Surgeon SA...

Best of luck with your build. Piecing it together is half the fun!

I use a Broughton 5c barrel for my 300WSM and Lawton barrel for the 270WSM both rifles build on Win (WSM)actions and you can seat bullets out to around 2.920". I've had the 150gr in the 270WSM at 3297fps with H-1000 and some 140gr at 3300fps with a 25 1/2" long barrel.

I was out trying some 130gr bullets today in the 270WSM and so far it been a easy rifle to load for I used a High Tech stock it weight right a 8 lbs with scope etc the 300WSM has a Mc Millian stock and a 24" barrel.

With the WSM case I got alittle concerned on bullet selection that I didn't get a bullet too heavy and long that it takes up case capacity .

I'd sure be talking to your gunsmith and getting his imput also as to actions/barrels/stocks etc he is the main guy. I'm in the planning stages with my gunsmith on a 257Wby most important to me is what barrel/twist for what bullets I want to shoot. For what I've seen of Kampfeldcustom on 24hr he puts together a fine rifle. Well good luck

My friend has a 7 wsm A-bolt very nice but I wanted to try the 270 wsm for less recoil and lighter bullets 140gr is the max I'll shoot.

Want to shoot lighter bullets with less recoil and powder burn?
Do a fast twist .243 or 243AI throated for 111gr or 115gr DTACs. That'd be a winner all around...

With what you describe the 7mm WSM is the way you should go. The 180 has a BC of .684, and you should be able to push it 3000 fps no problem with a 26" tube.

and the 6.5 wsm will be even better than a 7wsm. as much as I love the 270 bore, there just isn't a very good selection of sleek bullets for it. you need something on the 6.5 bore if you really wanna go long range. the 7mm is close however you need a very large case like the STW to duplicate what the 6.5 wsm can do for you

i agree with steve the 6.5 bullet is known for its accuracy it long ogive of the bullet is perhaps second to none i do have a winc 70 coyote 7wsm that shoots extremely well if i was building a gun it would be the 6.5 wsm

Back to the original question, there is nothing wrong with the 270WSM. In fact because of the popularity of the 270WSM bullet manufactures are making more bullets for that caliber.

However, the guys who are advocating the 7mm WSM are giving you very good advise. I would say the number of bullets to choose from in the 7mm out numbers the 270 10:1.

If you want an ultimate long range rifle, others are going with 30" Hart or Broughton barrels. Hunters are having the barrels fluted, F-class guys are not fluting the barrels.

I really like the 270, to me there was alot of bullets to choose from. One of the reasons for picking the 270wsm was for recoil, I get flinchy when shooting guns that have a heavier recoil thats way my other rifle is a 25-06.

Pac Nor has a great reamer for the 7 STW, and have them throat it for zero freebore. You will see blistering speeds of 3600+ out of a 27" tube with the 140g bullet. Accuracy with our guns is 3" at 550 yards. Deer never take a step after being hit...never. Pac Nor will charge you $490 for their best Stainless match barrel, chambered, and true your action. For best accuracy, I would not recommend a barrel contour less than a #5. We have 4 of the "Sendero" coutours that are fluted...unreal accurate.

It only took one trip to the range to work up loads that were shooting much less than 1/2".

My kids gave me a Savage M-10 a few years ago in 270 WSM, I was sceptical at first, but it has proven to be a great short action longer range rifle. I knocked a yote down at six hundred yards last winter with it 130 grn Hornady soft point handload. My SIL says it was a lucky shot, have not had the opportunity to prove it one way or the other yet.
