270 wsm vs 22-250

Coyote stalker

Hi I'm new to the forum and just wanted to get some opinions from more experienced hunters on some calibers. I'm wanting to buy a bolt gun for long range (300-800yards )and for coyote and wolves .. I was thinking a 22-250 but then someone had mentioned a 270wsm , can anyone give me their thoughts or opinions ?

I had (past tense) a 270 WSM. Not a real fan of the .277 bullet selection for what I wanted to do

I have a 22-250 and love it

However, given your parameters of what you consider long range and/or coyotes or wolves, this to me would be a no brainer for a fast twist 6mm variant shooting the heavy bullets, say something like a 6x47 Lapua and 105 Bergers. It will do all that you listed as your desired objectives.

As mentioned, anything in the 6.5 category (6.5 creed, 260 rem etc...) Great wind bucking capability and great knockdown power at those ranges.

Unless you reload, I'd stay with a mainstream caliber. The short mags are ok, afaik they're not the 2nd coming they were advertised as when they came out.

Welcome! They are 2 very different calibers. If you plan to stretch out 300 yds and beyond on a wolf I would for sure go bigger than a 22-250. I have no experience hunting wolf but I have seen coyotes take a beating before so I can only imagine what the wolf can handle. I'd would be willing to bet anything in the 6 mm (243, 6mm rem., etc) or the 6.5 (260, 6.5 creedmoor) would serve you much better....or bigger. Of the two I would likely go 270. Good luck!

The plain ole .308 in a good rifle with good glass and practice is still a good easy to load for easy to find ammo for rifle. It can do 800 quite well. Wealth of information almost anywhere you look.

I don't reload unfortunately and did want to stay with a mainstream caliber for readily available ammo .. I've read about the 6.5 creed .. Some say good varmit and others say paper puncher only. I've read all over 22-250 is the best coyote for sure according to most .. But long range and wolves makes it more difficult to choose. I shoot 223 now for coyotes. I want a versatile bolt gun for the two diff animals.

Paper puncher vs hunting depends upon the bullet you use, not the caliber, per se. I am not sure if there is any 6.5 creed ammo avail with hunting round or not. You may want to stick with the .308 as someone has mentioned from the perspective of finding hunting ammo easily. I like the 6.5 because it has less recoil than a 308 and many other cartridges and also bucks wind better but I reload so I can pick my poison when it comes to bullets. I live in Idaho and know the wind blows so I would want a round that is good in wind.

A 270wsm is nice. Not a bench gun but more than adequate for your goal. A 150 with a 525bc will get you to 800 or more. The mod 70 coyote is a good shooting gun. Not too much recoil wise either. My 13 year old daughter Loves this rifle.

You have a .223 for coyotes so if you want something to also double for wolves, I would get something bigger than a .22-250. For factory ammo, .243, .270, and .308 would be good choices.

I think I'm gonna give the 270wsm a run and see how I like it. I got a Remington model 7 Cdl I can pick up for cheap. It's been accurized and some trigger work. I can check it off the list if I don't like it.

If wind was my concern, the .277 isn't the line of bullets I would consider
If I didn't reload, I'd look at the 6.5 Creed and rock the 140 Amax
BC on those bullets is better than a 150 .277 Vld and take less powder than a 270 WSM

If your gonna pick up a Remington cheap you should see if it has a mag bolt face for the WSM
