284 winchester

they are a good caliber. if you handload it will do you really well. it's probably a medium length action rifle and the case neck is short so bullets have to be seated deep. i'd choose soft point bullets instead of any poly tip bullet since PT's are longer bullets.

I still shoot a 284, it is one of the revolutionary case designs. Two of the best long range wildcats are based on the case: 6mm/284 and the 6.5mm/284. Depending on your twist you have a wide range of bullet weights available. Sierra HPBT Match Kings shoot good in it.

An idea way before its time. I had one (stolen in an unfortunate series of events)mine was built on a Mauser 98 with a McGowen barrel in the early seventies. I still have some of my old brass and at the time had just started working with loading for it. I don't recall the twist on my barrel but it shot the med weight bullets best and had a rather short throat. Factory ammo back then was nearly non existent and almost always loaded with light bullets. The gun was given to me by a friends wife after he had passed. It took me several daring tests (prior to having any knowledge of chamber casts) to figure out what it was.

I shoot one in a 99c and 99 AND Win 100. Caliber (7mm) bowls over deer and bear with authority. Ammo is getting very pricey here in NH, $31 a box minimum. 150 grain is standard factory weight and shoot real well in my 99. FYI it is the only US factory produced cartrdge with a rebated case.

Great little cartridge if had been made today and hyped like all the other short cases it would be very popular. My uncle used one for years great little gun. The bullet selection is probably about a good as it gets without being a 30 caliber. You'll probably have to hand load to reach it's full potential.

I had a Winchester Model 100 semi-auto in .284 Winchester, several years ago. It started jamming, and in the days of having a young family, I just couldn't afford to keep something that wouldn't work, so I got rid of it. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif I would like to have it back, even in the same condition.

About 3 years ago, I bought a new Savage 16FLSS in 7mm-08 Rem. and sent it to SharpShooter's Supply to have it rechambered to .284 Win. It cost me $166.00, shipping included, to have the rechamber job and some other work done. Yeah, I know, the 7mm-08 is a great round, with a proven track record, and a better selection of factory ammo, BUT I don't use factory ammo in any centerfire, so that is a moot point.

Ever since I had the Model 100, I had wanted a lefty bolt rifle in .284, and this was the only reasonable way to have one. Melvin Forbes makes/made his UltraLightArms rifles in lefty .284, starting at $2400.00. .............. I rest my case.

I am loading 58.5 grains of Reloder 19, with Win Lr primers, and a Speer 130 SPT. Accuracy is okay,7/8" or so.
Velocity is in the 3050 range.

Is your A-Bolt original? I was not aware that Browning had ever chambered the .284 . This cartridge is one of my favorites, although I may not use it as much as I use my other rifles.

A Ruger 77 in .284 Winchester is a collector, and worth a bit of money!!

Great cal...wil match anything a 280 Rem can do, and it will do it in a shorter action rifle, and its just a cool round...have fun

Browning and Ruger had factory rifles chamber for the 284. I've got one it's up at the gunsmith for the longer magazine box should have it back one of these days. If you can get the bullets out it's a pretty good round.
