Problem is that usually the Roman Candle 12 gauge won't pattern as uniformly and consistently well as the larger bore 10 gauge. There is a general principle about a "square load" in shotgunning as it relates to patterns. Basically the more square the load as opposed to longer and rectangular the better the load usually patterns. It is a principle that has been proven and recognized for a very long time among shotgun ballistic minded folks. It isn’t to say that an out of proportion load can’t pattern well, just that as a general rule it is easier and more efficient to achieve good patterns from what has been termed a better balanced “square load.”

ersonally I think it's a lot of extra recoil, cost, and hype with negligible recoil. As far as 3.5" guns not costing that much more, I've been looking at Benellis because I'm saving my sheckles to get one. At Sportsmans Warehouse for example a SBEII was $1579, and an M2 (what ill probly get) is $1179. I know they are not "exactly" the same gun but similar enough to see a price difference
Most of the problems I hear of with shotguns in general and particularly as it relates to Benelli's stem from the guns chambered for the longer shell. Most likely the M2 will do 90+% of the chores you want it to do and will prove to be a more reliable and less troublesome shotgun. The M1/M2 platform is dead nuts reliable and one of the most proven of all and any semi-auto shotgun in history.
