30/06 and CCI LR Magnum primer?

Can a 30/06 use the magnum primers? I accidently picked up them instead of the cci regular LR primers for my 220 swift!! But i do have 30/06 to load also! I havnt quite learned enough between the regular and magnum primers! Whats the big difference? And can 220 swift use them effectively? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused1.gif

I use CCI large rifle mag primers in the 243, 308 and 280 Remington. I've been doing this for a bunch of years now with no problems. I have worked up all loads for the magnum primers and would suggest that you do the same as any time you change components.

The CCI mag primers are supposed to be a little hotter for better ignition in large cases and large powder charges. Frankly I can't tell any difference in velocity of any loads I chronographed between mag and regular CCI primers.

Andrew,
It is my understanding that magnum primers burn hotter and slightly longer in duration than regular primers. According to my manuals, mag primers are recommended in very cold weather, when using dense ball powders and large capacity cases. I just recently started using ball powder instead of extruded and am in the process of switching to magnum primers since I have to work up new loads anyway.
Personally, I would not substitute magnum primers if you were using standard primers as you could create some high pressures.

The differance is not going to be in velocity but in the pressure spike at ignition. Start load development 10% below what you would normally load. Or at the minimum of a published load useing standard primers. I use mag primers in my 30-06 loads but those are for winter use only and have been worked up in temps of 20 degrees and lower, mag primers are god insurance in sub zero temps or in very cold and very humid (wet) environmnets. Use standard caution as you would in developing any new load, look for signs of pressure ( flattened primers , hard extraction, ect.) you will be OK.

The CCI250's are the coolest of the Mag primers other than the 9 1/2M's which are a joke.

Like IDbob said, they are a great primer.
