30-30 powder and Bullets your thoughts

My rifle will shoot about 12 inches high at 400 yards with this load. That is with the rear sight as low as it will go.
Would I use it for game bigger than a yote? No. Sure would be fun on jack rabbits though. Just a fun round to shoot.

By rear sight as low as it will go I presume you are shooting Iron sights, Right? You are talking 30-30, Right??

On that assumption. I want a rifle like yours, My 300 Win. Mag with IRON sights will not shoot 12 inches high at 4oo YDS with the rear sight as low as it will go...That has to be one [beeep] of a long range killing tool.

You are one funny fella.

I really think what you meant to say is it shoots 12 inches LOW at 400 YDS. with the rear sight as HIGH as it will go.

Am I right.

My rifle isn't one of the newer POS Winchesters nade in the last 25 years. Yes it is a 30/30. Mine was made in the late 30's or 40-41. Inherited from my grandfather. Yes, iron sights. Rear sight ramp is not a real fine adjustment. I was shooting rather warm loads pushing 110 grain bullets. So before you start calling BS on something you might want to consider that some things are possible. I never stated I killed anything with it. And also, up until about 3 years ago my eyesight was that good. You may reason to doubt it, but don't call total BS on it. I did have a witness to verify the shots.

While I almost hate to comment... As I have not shot YOUR rifle (that was built in the 30's or 40's when evidently they made barrels that shoot a LOT faster, better, flatter, & farther; when used in conjunction with powders available in today’s times). I have just a few points to ponder.

Alliant says with 34 grains you may get 2708 with R7. Since you have a barrel that was made in the 30's or 40's; let’s say you get 2900fps (which is very doubtful with a 30/30, but hey, I've never shot your rifle...). Going farther, using todays ballistic calculators (which may not be relevant to guns built in the 30's or 40's...) To be 12" high at 400 yards with a 110 vmax going 2900fps at muzzle, you will also be just under 12" high at 100 yards & 21" high around 260 yards. Again this is BEST case scenerio with unrealistic 30/30 velocities.

Now... anyone who shoots iron sights much (as DAB has described for you), knows that if your rifle is shooting high, you move the rear sight down to lower trajectory. Move the back sight up, & it raises the point of impact. So in summary, the lower the rear sight, the lower the bullet prints. The higher the rear sight, the high the bullet prints...

They must have really known what they were doing in the 30's or 40's??? With the rear adjustment bottomed out; your still 12" too high at 100 yards & out of adjustment

??? Give me a "newer POS Winchesters nade in the last 25 years" anyday. Although my 94 from the early 70's shoots just fine & where I point it too (but not out to 400 yards).

I bet if you were to move that back sight all the way up "on your rifle"; you'd probably be dead on at a mile. What an "internet rifle" you have there!!!! WOW

Give N-130 a try for the 110 GR. bullet. According to Hornady you can get 2600 FPS with N130 powder.

Now with that if you sight your rifle in to be DEAD ON at 300 YDS you still will be 32.21 inches LOW at 400 yds and 94.28 inches LOW at 500 yds. Your mid range bullet height would be approx. 11.40 Inches high at 150 YDS. Per Sierra manual.

So in saying that, your barrel must be bent if it is shooting 12 inches high with the rear sight set as low as it will go. Read what Coleridge said about the rear sight position and how raising or lowering it effects the bullets path.

Please read your post over again and ponder what you said.
