30-40 Krag for coyotes!

Has anyone ever hunted coyotes with a 30-40 krag? I have a Winchester 1895 old rifle that was made in 1921. I plan on using it for coyotes some. I know it is a little large. What factory loads are available if any? I am also going to take it deer hunting once in a while. Same question? Thanks!

They do have makers of the ammo out there.... I am also suprised that they 2 manufactures I know do not run the cost up on this ammo. I doubt you will ever find 30-40 krag ammo at wally world or the pawn shop, but you can get it.

Another interesting note is that this gun was designed to handle a heavy (200+) grain bullet. If a I recall right the twist on theese guns are not very friendly to a lighter bullets, the they have a hard time loading spitzer style bullets(we never noticed this, but they say it is true). We were shooting the 180 gr winchester the last time we fiddled with ours and were getting about a 4 inche groups open sights on the bench. Now I am sure we can do better with it, but we do not shoot it hardly at all nor do we reload.

Link for Winchester ammo

Winchester and remmington are the only ones making this round that I know of. We have a military issued 30-40 Krag that was used in Combat by someone in the fmaily. I have shot it and it still shoots well. Someday I will take it on a trophy hunt, just for the memories. The gun will definitely work for yotes. It is not that great down ranges, but it will get the job done.

Do you know how old yours is? Was it military issued? They are neat old guns for sure.

Well it's not a caliber I expected to see here. Did see some Remington 30-40 ammo at the gun shop a couple months ago and someone bought it. My grandfather used this caliber for deer hunting occasionally. Seems to me it shot pretty flat to about 100-150 yds then dropped alot.

Elks, mine was made in 1921. It is a Saddle Ring Carbine. I just found out Remington and Winchester carry this caliber. There are no military proof marks on it. It was carried by a Texas Ranger for a short time. I hunt coyotes with all my rifles old and new. Some are scoped and some are open. I guess that's why I don't get any better with one of them. I don't own a gun I will not shoot. Smallblock I don't reload. I will let ya'll know how it goes the first time I take it out.

if you can shoot it accurately, why not? just place your bullet into the imaginary grapefruit located directly between the two front legs, and one-third to one-half way up the chest. regardless of the angle of your shot. shooting an "old" predator with an "old" cartridge sounds great!

My dad recently gave me several of his guns. One is an 1894 Winchester 32-40. I use to use it deer hunting as a kid, though you can feel the long heavy barrel after a day in the field.

I went to 'the old scrounger' for ammo [180 gr]. Don't think I will use it for yotes unless one finds it's way infront of my deer stand, but I'm with you, I like to give all my guns some time in the field.

My brother-in-law needed a deer rifle so I sold him an old Krag carbine. He's been killing deer for 20 yrs now, he did take off the Redfeild sight and put a red dot on it. His eyes are getting as bad as mine. The local gun shops in northern WI usually have a couple of boxes of 30-40's on the shelf. When I had it I loaded some 170gr cast bullets and killed a few fox with it after deer season. At one time it was considerred a pretty fair elk and bear gun.
