.30 caliber carbine opinions

I am searching for an alternatives to a shotgun for fast action, close up firepower for yotes.
A friend gave me a Plainfield Machine M1 carbine and I'm impressed with the accuracy through the peeps (< 3" @ 100 yds.)
I noticed that the down range energy numbers are comparable to a .17 rem.
I plan to have a 16" AR built before next season, but for the here and now, this seems superior to my shotgun. Plus its a heckofalot lighter.
Experiences or opinions?
 
I've never done anything but plink with one Crazyhorse, but heck try it out and see. Can you get hollowpoint or jacketed bullets for that? You'd want something that was going to open up quickly at those velocities. Best bet is try it and see how it works.

This is just my opinion as I've never shot coyotes with an M1 carbine, only played around with them. In my situation I'd pick a shotgun every time over the M1. Most of the time our up close shooting happens fast and that shotgun w/#4 buck is hard to beat. IMO.
 
I hear ya brdeano. My problem with my shotgun is twofold: A) here in Oklahoma we're limited to shot size of BB or smaller.
B) I'm shooting a Rem 1100 with a 2 3/4" chamber. Beyond 40 yds my patterns are less than stellar.
I missed a gray fox last week at about 50 yds shooting HD B shot. I've been burnt twice in the last two weeks by close range coyotes that I couldnt get the scope of my .243 on fast enough.
IDBob: the friend who gave me this rifle also included 300 + rounds. Theyre mostly ball ammo, but there's also some Norma Hps and Federal 110 gr softpoints. I had some fail-to-fires with the Normas, but the Federals seem to shoot fine.
 
CrazyHorse66,, with the right bullet the M1 Carbine should do just fine.... I had one for many years and had no problem staying in the "kill" zone on man sized silhouette targets at 200yds with the peep sights...This was in the days when officers didn't have access to ARs and the others out now...

If you ever get into reloading for it, I have a bunch of brass (15#?) lying around and a couple of extra mags..send me a PM..

tntrapper: I'm gonna be using Federal 110 gr softpoints.
I cleaned her good and went back to the range today. The rear sight came loose, I'm gonna have to re-stake it.
I should have it ready for next weekend. It sure is a fun rifle! I see a scout mount and an Aimpoint in her future!
Thanks for the offer on the brass OT. I haven't picked up on reloading as of yet, but I appreciate the gesture!
 
I have the Ultimak on my GM M1. With an aimpoint on it, it is a gas to shoot and a plenty of accurate for 'yotes out to 100 or so.

A friend told me he used to hunt hogs in Hi and on Guam with one. FWIW They had there place at one time, but you would be better served with a 30-30. That in my opinion anyway.
 
I do not shoot coyotes with the M-1 carbine. I have an AR for that, although for shorter work the carbine would do just fine. Just watch ammo. FMJ surplus would not work real well and would pencil through with little internal damage. Anything else could run into feed problems, so make sure the bullet feeds before you load 1000 of them.

I tried some 90 grain XTP's, very accurate but would not feed. I have some sierra 110 SPRN that have the same profile as the FMJ and will try loading a few of them. That should be a nice little 100 yard coyote load.

The Federal softpoints feed without a hitch, and I located an individual who is selling me 100 rounds of Winchester hollowpoints. It seems that everyone is sold out on most .30 cal ammo, but there is still some Federal to be had. I may have to get into reloading this summer to keep her fed next year. Of course I should have an AR carbine by then.
I restaked the rear sight and sighted it back in. The Ultimak rail is on the way and an Aimpoint is a click away when my tax refund gets here. I think I'm set!!!
 
I have to send my Ultimak rail back, it is tilted up at the back. The gun is very accurate as is with the peep and front post. I may just use it that way with a little paint on the front site for quick accusation.
