30 RAR review and range report (pics)

After reading about the the 30 RAR hear this morning and seeing that people were asking questions I decided to get it out and shoot a little.

I've been waiting on this rifle for quiet some time. I'm aware many others here have been too. Remington had originally scheduled the relase of this new rifle and round a couple of years ago. They ran into some issues but finnaly now have all them worked out. I talked with the Remington guys a few months ago and they had just finished their final testing and that all the test rifles passed with flying colors in both reliability and exceptional accuracy. In fact one guy said that of all the rifles he had tested that the accuracy across the board with all the rifles was outstanding. Since that time I've had my hat in the ring for a rifle when the first ones came off the line.

As an AR nut I was very excited to hear that my gun had finally been shipped. The only ammo that Remongton had in stock at the time was the 125 grain Core-Lokt. While I'm a big fan of the Core-Lokt bullets I belive I would like to try the 150's when for hunting. I think they will offer better penatration and results on the larger hogs I sometimes encounter. From experience I also believe they will do better on deer. With that said I only had the 125 grain bullets to shoot for this range report.

At the range I've run about 160 rounds through the gun and the accuarcy was very impressive. The rifle has functioned 100%. The recoil is very minimal. I'd say less than a 410 shotgun. This will be a very easy rifle for even my 10 year old son to deer hunt with.

Here is a few pictures.

I'm anxious to test the 150 grain bullets to see how well they do. I'm also looking forward to deer season to test it out on the real thing. If I get the chance I may even shoot a few hogs with it before then.

Thanks for reading my report. If you have any questions about the rifle or ammo I will do my best to answer them.

Thanks for the report. That is a cool looking little round and the rifle looks sweet. Excuse me for being lazy and not looking it up, how fast is that 125 moving out? I use to shoot 150 corelokts out of my 7 mag and the deer were like they got hit by lightning, every time. My premium bullets always kill them but they run off a little ways.

Thanks for the report Byron, That lead sled has been around for a while hasn't it? lol How do you get around the pistol grip hitting the cross bar? I gave up and just went to bags when I shot in my R15....

Byron-Thanks for the pix and write up. I am glad that hopefully the .30AR rifles will become available. The cartridge is a great addition to the AR15 platform. I agree that the ar15 is a lot handier and lighter than the ar10 rifles
Ars are pretty heavy and clunky to begin with-however I like them a lot.

I read many posts comparing the .30AR to the 7.62x39 but if the published ballistics are anywhere near correct the .30AR is head and shoulders above the Russian.

Does Remington plan on selling the uppers only? That is what I would like to buy as I already have the R15 rifle in .223. TnTnTn

The rifles have a 1:10" twist, which would be perfect for the lighter bullets as well, I'm going to be using these rifles for predators on windy days.

Thanks Guys,

Skullcreek,

The 125 grainers are leaving at about 2800 fps. I can't recall what the published velocities are for the 150 grainers. I too am a big fan of the Core-Lokt bullets. They have been very accurate for me and performance on deers and hogs have never left me wanting more. To my way of thinking many of the "premium" bullets are too tough to expand well and tranfer energy (hydrostatic shock) on light skinned big game. Others are too frangible to retain their weight to reliably penetrate. The Core-Likt bullets expand well within a wide velocity window, but also stay together. Another added bonus is that they are less costly that the so called "premiums". If you want a tougher bullet Remington now offers the Core-Lokt with a bonded core. These work well in the faster magnums and on tougher game.

Allstar,

Yes sir, that lead sled has seen much use. I love the thing and highly recommend then to anyone that shoots much. I really haven't had any issued with the sled while shooting my ARs. The photo shows how I position the rifle in the rest.

TnTnTn,

I'm with you on the weight. Remington though has shaved quiet a bit of weight off their AR's compared to what others offer. While I've not weighed this rifle fully rigged up I would say it is comparable with the weight of most standard sporting rifles. Cetainly more handy than the AR-10/R-25. I do like my R-25(308) but now that I have the 30 RAR I can see that the R-25 may get carried much less often.

The 30 RAR is closer to the 308 than the 7.62x39.

As of now I don't believe they will be offering only uppers. Once orders are met for complete rifles this may change.

Thanks for the comments,

Thanks for the report ! I know that the 2800 fps is accurate on the factory 125 corlock I ran some through my chrono and that was about what I got out them . I pulled a few bullets and there was about 35 grains of powder , It was not a ball powder but looked like reloader 7 or some of the other alliant powders. The clip looks like if kinda feeds from the side and not a center feed like my converted bushmaster 450 clip . I would like to try one of those in my 30 AR and see how it feeds. The 30AR will out perform the 7.62x39 by quite a lot . I have been loading some of my AA2200 data powder in my 30AR with the 110 sierra varmint bullets and get 3183 fps with 37.5 grains of powder with no pressure signs. I got lucky and found some once fired brass at a Dallas gun show and now I am really stocked up on Brass. I found out something interesting about the 30 AR history . I found some brass stamped 300 American which was the same as the brass stamped Remington 30AR I bought all they had along with all the 30AR brass . I hope that some the hog hunters out there get to try these out on wild hogs and see how good they work on hogs . Thanks! Mark

I was seriously thinking about getting one of these. Does anyone know if Remington is going to bring out their 6.8spc cartridge in the R-15?

I ran across this thread and it reminded me of some research I did on the .30AR a year or two ago. If the round's popularity was a little stronger, I would certainly own one. I have looked at much of the ballistics data on this round and would love to own one, but it seems that ammo, and brass availability just isn't there and isn't likely to get any better. Too, bad. Hard to believe that such a promising round just didn't take off, but then, it isn't the first and wont be the last. With all the .308 bullets out there, you could do a lot with this rifle. If I had one, I certainly wouldn't let it go. Brass can be used quite a few times if its not abused.

I have one of the R-15s and love it. I've been loading for it with 125 grain Sierra Pro-Hunters and Benchmark powder.

When I could get my hands on the Rem factory 125 grain Accu-tips it shot those really well for factory ammo.

The only mod I did to it was install a Timney trigger.
