300 AAC Blackout, 6.5 Grendel, or 458 SOCOM

I can't decide which version I want to go with for my next build. I want a larger caliber AR and I'm leaning toward the .300 AAC because I have lots of short/neck damaged brass. This build will have a suppressor as well. Thoughts on the calibers in question?

I haven't even begun to look at what's out there for reloading components on any of the calibers so that's a big factor in the overall decision that needs to be made.

Looking for some feedback or experience with any of the mentioned rounds. I'm also open to suggestion for a better option besides what is listed but please provide arguments as to why they would be better. Thanks in advance for any replies. Cheers.

What are you wanting to do with said AR? That will make a big difference in the thought/opinions/suggestions that you will get. I have a Grendel in an M4gery platform and if I ever have to only have one gun that will be it. Pretty accurate, sufficient range and energy, fairly low recoil, has not been at all picky to load for so far using a lot of the same powders and primers as my 223's. Probably will have to run a 30 caliber can on it. For an all around cartridge it is my pick of the three you listed.

It looks like solid round. Maybe use to hunt larger game than coyote like deer or elk, and coyote. I also like that you are able to use the same powder/primers as .223 that certainly has a huge influence on the final selection of which caliber I choose. Thanks for your input.

I'm a big fan of a big pile of lead moving fast and quite. The 458 would get my vote if you can afford the components and the suppressors that are effective on them

If you are counting on using the same powder and primers as your .223? The 458 Socom is not even close. It uses large pistol primers and powder that is to fast for a 223. Lil Gun and H110 don't work well in a 223.

Elk and a BLK might be a tough one. The 458 would be a hammer but poor choice for coyotes. I would spli it and go for the fast mover Z6.5. It will do them all close and far.

After reading more and more I think I'm going to go with the .300 with a suppressor in a 16" barrel. Curious how well a .30 can will work on .223/.22lr rifles?

Couple thoughts....

1) if you're going to spend the $ and time with a suppressed 300blk, fork out the extra $200 and get an SBR. 16" and 300blk shouldn't be used in the same sentence!

2) I know some do but I wouldn't shoot 22lr through my 308 can. Along the same line as above, fork out the extra and get a rimfire can. Trust me, your first won't be your last.

Good luck with the build though! I'm just finishing up my 300 and think it's an awesome round!

I certainly see not using the can with .22lr.

Curious as to the reasoning for the shorter barrel and a can vs longer with can? Is it the cycle issues or something else?

Thanks for the info. At $200 a stamp I'm happy to hear it works good. Do you shoot both sub/super in the .223?

With an SBR you register the receiver right? So along with that receiver you can have multiple short barrels or am I incorrect in my thinking.

I just got my Blackout barrel. I need a couple more parts and then build it. So, that's the route I would go. I have a bunch of 5.56 brass, and primers, etc. I will be using it for coyotes and paper.

If you go with a 16" barrel, make sure you get one that has a pistol length gas system. With an adjustable gas block, you can run mid weight bullets subsonic.

I ended up with a 16" carbine length and it will have an adjustable gas block.

I will be getting an additional matching upper in 6.5 Grendel eventually but for now the .300 BLK is the most economical choice due to the various multipurpose parts of my current ar config, brass, primers, and powder.

I managed to come across a HM 16" .300BLK barrel, stainless, and fluted. It's a very nice barrel. So I guess I'll eventually have 2 .300BLK rifles. Crazy how things work out because I picked up a blemish lower for $70 at my local LGS too. This gun stuff is expensive and addictive!
