300 blackout shooters and loaders

Just picked up an 8" upper to throw on my sbr. Figured I'd run it with my .338 can or a 30 cal cookie cutter muzzle device. Planning on using a vortex spark II with a 3x magnifier.

I haven't even run a round through the thing yet and was wondering what bullet/powder combo people are liking and sub or super sonic preference, and what's the POI difference between the 2 @ 100yrds.

I’ve got a 9” bcm barreled 300, and don’t reload but like the Barnes TAC-TX 110 gr stuff. Actually took it out today and was on within < 1” rise/drop at 50, 100, and 150 yds.

Otherwise Hornadys 208 gr subsonic if I’m shooting at known distances without the possibility of long shot.

I have had good performance and accuracy with 110 and 125 gr bullets using Alliant 300-MP and H110. Very similar to H110, good velocity and case fill. For subs, I use 1680 for the heavies. This and 208 Amax is a sweet shooter. Considerable data available at 300blktalk.com. Sierra has some new data with a very nice layout available online. You may find that subs run great but supers are over gassed...or visa-versa. The above site has all manner of threads to address your questions, do a bunch of reading first.

I looked at "SBR and pistol" uppers I just think 10.5in is the way to go.
It has worked out for me. This is a 10.5 with a Specwar 7,62.
This is a Midway tube 1 pound

Nice looking rig. I already have a 10.5" 223 upper and a 10.5" sbr ak47 pistol. I was wanting a shorter host for my 338 cal can.

what twist barrel did you get?

get a chronograph if you dont have one already. when working with subsonics its almost mandatory.

also, if you're unfamiliar with loading subs - its the reverse of the process you do for loading supers. that being for subs you start with higher powder charge and work down until you reach your desired FPS. going the other way around can result in a stuck bullet due to low velocity.

one other thing to note - when doing your load development for subs - DO NOT DO IT WITH YOUR CAN ON.

you have to get your load set, and then do a stability test. we're dealing with long heavy for caliber bullets running at very low velocity's and you do not want a baffle strike. get your intended load running 1000-1020 fps so you have a proper sub and then put up a target at 10' and make sure the holes in the paper are nice and round. If they're not, back up and tweak until they are. if you've got wobble at 10', theres a good chance you've got wobble at a few inches out of the barrel = high risk of baffle strike destroying, or at the very least damaging your suppressor.

^^^^^^ Exactly what Plant. One said. For powders I've had good luck with Win 296 for supers. The subs have done best with A1680, and CFEBLK a close second. As far as POI, it is drastically different at 100 yards. It is bad enough I sighted in for subs and will not bother with supers probably ever. If a dial up scope was used it would be easy to adjust for the 2 loads though.

One thing to note about 1680 - its DIRTY DIRTY DIRTY as a sub powder. Especially suppressed. You'll get unburnt granuals all over in your lower.

it works awesome, cycles basically anything, but will result in a lot of cleaning. I do recomend keeping a pound or so of it around when working with blackout subs - for testing reasons. If you're working with a new build and 1680 wont cycle it subsonic - you can 100% guarantee you have a mechanical issue to address!

Lil gun will work great for supers, as well as h110, N110, w296 and even 4227 for heavier supers (150gr above). 1680 will also do good heavy supers (150gr and up) and doesnt seem to be as dirty when run supersonic. Do not use lil gun with cast supers unless you're gas checking them. It burns too hot and will degrade the base of even powder coated/hitek coated bullets and cause leading. I did some testing with it early on and i was spraying molten lead out of the end of my barrel from gas cutting at the port. Yikes! i had to scrape lead off my magnetospeed bayo!

If you can get your hands on some Shooters World Blackout powder (Lovex DO-63) that stuff is another fantastic subsonic powder. As an added bonus its about 3x as clean as 1680 is. You can use 1680 data as a starting point, or i believe SW has load data too. As i understand it, lovex used to make 1680 for AA but lost the contract at some point. DO-63 is their version of the powder, but its a little bit hotter (and denser) than 1680 is. Now its being sold as Shooters World Blackout. IIRC - dont have my notes in front of me - I had to drop my loads about 0.3gr to match 1680 velocity's, but otherwise i shoot it hands down over 1680 these days as it saves me a TON of elbow grease time.

For supers generally focus on 110gr - 135gr bullets. Especially when hunting. For plinking 147/150's will bang steel just dandy and punch nice holes in paper on the cheap. As a friendly note - most .308 dia "varmint" bullets will act more like traditional controlled expansion hunting bullets at 300 blk speeds. So dont panic if you read about people using Vmax or Varmageddons for a Deer bullet. They're designed as varmint bullets at 308/30-06 velocitys where they're cooking along with impact velocity's 2800 fps or so. Slowed down where impact velocity is going to be 1800-2000 fps or so they'll do exactly what we want them to do.

125 SST"s are probably one of the better hunting bullets for the blackout, second only to the 110 and 120 barnes blacktips.

I want to try out the new 135 FTX bullets on some critters this year, but i've had other stuff on the blocks for deer hunting.

theres tons of other options out there, being .308 dia bullets, just be warned that you need to do some homework before selecting your hunting bullet of choice as many/most .308 dia projo's simply arent designed to expand at blackout speeds, so they most often act like FMJ's and will just pencil through.

right now I am loading 125 sst with H110 for my supers and lil gun with 220 gr footballs for my subs. I am not hunting with the subs, just plunking(220 gr don't "plink" lol).

I like this dang thing so much it is just about all I carry. 95% of what we shoot is under 100 yds.

Mine is a 10.5 inch as well.
