Have you hunted at all with the 208gr Amax? I'm pretty sure that bullet is discontinued and has been replaced by the 208gr ELD-M, but I think it's doubtful that either one would expand at subsonic speeds.
Yes the amax has been replaced by the ELD-M with the new tip material, but i still have several thousand AMAX on stash from before the changeover (about half blems, half retail packed)
my usage for that load is just paper and steel. so basically playing around.
as you noted - they're simply not going to expand at subsonic speeds, and therefore are essentially a 208gr 30 caliber ice pick.
there's a lot better choices for hunting - the Maker TRex, the Lehigh Mximum expansion or controlled fracturing, or even the hornady 190 sub-x... that i wouldnt even consider using the amax/eld-m for hunting purposes.
