300 rum vs. 338 lapua

If all things were equal as far as the rifle lets say a remington 700p for each, which rifle in the chambering would you prefer. The application is long range target shooting 600 to 1500 yards. I am looking at both the 220 and 240 grain pills for the 300 rum, and 250 and 300 grainers for the 338 lapua. Barrel life is something I have not considered, but I have considered price. I am also curious can the 300 rum rifle be rebarreled to a 338 lapua? What do you think?

The 300 rum is a little cheaper to shoot but the barrel life is a little better in the .338 lapua. My load in my 300 rum is pushing 208 gr at 3075 and at 1500 yrds thats 42 Moa drop and still 1352 fps left now my 338 lapua is pushing 300gr smk at 2860 at 1500 yards it's 44 Moa drop and 1420 fps. Also the if you was to rebarrel a rum you'd have to open up the bolt face for the lapua.

Neither one. I would get a .338 edge or .338RUM The edge takes .300 RUM brass necked up to .338 and gets a slight advantage over the .338 RUM due to a little higher case capacity.
I am going to build a .338 RUM this summer.

If your going to push out to 1500 yards it's the 338 that will win in the wind. If you might want to hunt with it, the 300 wins because of bullet selection. Cost of ammo and recoil, the 300 wins. With a good brake, not the Remington, there's little difference.

This is not on your list of options, but I suggest considering the 338 NM, I'm getting the 300 OTM's almost as fast as the Lapua, with less powder...

Call Kirby Allen and get a 338AX Lapua Mag Imp. Its about 10 grains more than STD Lapua.

If you are going to shoot alot over 1000yds Lapua. If your going to shoot more in the 600yd range. I would look at something less expensive to feed and less recoil.

I agree with most of this, but with a little change.

I kind of consider beyond 1200 or so, 338 territory.

Between 600 to 1200, I'd really look no further than a 7 mag. Cheaper bullets, relatively less powder per case, you don't need a brake, and doesn't beat you to death doing so. There's a bunch of stuff suitable to play to 1k w/o breaking the bank also if that's where most of the play time will be.

Yes.
General Dynamics makes a LWMMG chambered in 338NM, I've also "heard" Remington offers this cal in it's MSR.

338 Lapua in the 700 police, the bolt has a AR type of extractor because the standard spring extractor won't work with the bigger Lapua rim.

I shoot .223 at a 1000...

The tracers are pretty!

+1 on the hmr but I use it on targets past 1500. If you hit anything closer than that there isn't much target left!

If you get either of those... let me know, because I will come shoot it with you, better yet we may have to test it out on a SD mule deer
