i'm going to be reloading 170gr. flat nose sierra bullets for a marlin 336c i just picked up.in the second edition richard lee manual there's loads for h414,imr4350 and h380 but none of my other manuals[hornady, sierra] have these loads can they be used for a lever action gun? i only ask becuase i have a lot of the three powders.any help woukld be appreciated.

Your H414 will work, the others you list, not so much, that's why they are not listed in the other manuals. A old pet load with that bullet uses IMR-4895. It and H414 will give you good speed and accuracy. Here is a couple other places to look.

Nosler data

Hodgdon data

FWIW, the Speer #13 lists 30.5 to 34.5 grains of IMR 4350 behind their 170-grain flat nosed Spire Point. Additionally, I am told a lot of CBA shooters use 4350 behind heavy bullets in the 30-30.

And H380 MIGHT work with that 170 as well, but I would start somewhere around 30 grains and work up very slowly, not over half a grain at a time. It may be that powder is too fast for that heavy a bullet, but it may not be, depending on where you want velocity to be. And to me, velocity is secondary to accuracy.

Good luck!

thanks for the info guys, all i could find around here was imr-4064 and hodgdon leverevolution.i'll try these until i find the other powders.thanks again

I use H4895 in 150 and 170 grain bullets and have very good accuracy. No pressure problems. Also load H4895 in 30/06 and .308 with great accuracy. Might be worth your while to look at H4895 or IMR 4895.

I use 32 gr of IMR 3031 behind a 110gr speer HP bullet in my 3030. Model 94 carbine and it handles the loading really well.
