308 AR-10 type rifle

I guess this is going to turn in to a "which one" type post, but I don't know anything about AR-10-type rifles. I've got plans to get one this fall, so I'm starting my research...(also knowing there might be a wait for some companies).

I'm probably going to end up with one of the lower-tier ones...DPMS, Armalite, Rock River, etc.
I would love a Knight or LMT but just don't have the money for one of those...

Guess I'm just looking for a review of those few I mentioned I would be looking at. I'm wanting an 18 or 20" barreled one.
It will mostly be a target shooter...maybe an occasional coyote gun, but I've already got a .243wssm dtech collecting dust for that job...seems like whenever i go out, I use the RRA .223.

Anyway...thoughts?...what would you go with for accuracy and reliability of the ones I can get between 1000-1500?...I'm also asking because I heard some AR-10's have bolt? problems? (again...i don't know...that's why I'm asking which ones to stay away from!)

My R-25 has been a great rifle, and another plus for the R-25/DPMS is that Magpul makes P-Mags for this style lower.

I have an R-25 in 243. It shoots sweet. But it is heavy. Why does the detch get shunned. As far as target shooting what distance and type. You all ready have a great upper use it and save some cash for another upper from mike like his 6mmdti or 25dti.

Thanks for the info so far...

I just never use the dtech because I haven't bought any factory .243wssm ammo and I'm just getting started reloading. I just got done building my reloading room and now I'm just short on bullets, powder, primers. I've got about 200 brass, but would like a little more.

Anyway,
I've got .223 and some 308 left over from an old rifle. I've just been wanting a 308 for some odd reason! I just can't be happy with what I've got! ha...the grass in always greener!

Why not get an AR12 from ARPerformance? It's a .308 in a lighter AR platform than the AR10. Harrison builds a great rifle. I have a 6.8x43 from him and love it.

"I.T.S.-12
The ITS-12 has broken the heavy 308 mold, most 308 ARs weigh around 9 lbs even in the lightweight models, the "12" is a midsized 308 between the AR15 and AR10 in size, runs apx 7 lbs with a midweight 16" barrel, it uses AR15 floats and rails which give a much wider selection, lighter weight and less cost.
Uppers fit DPMS and Mega 308 lowers. "

I have a DPMS LR-308 and love it. I ordered it last fall and took around 10 weeks to get. It doesn't seen to be too finnicky (sp?) either. I have ran a slew of 168 gr's thru it and haven't had too rough a time finding loads for it. Here are a few targets from some load development earlier this spring.

Hello all
Somebody correct me if I'm wrong. It's my understanding that there are TWO different patterns of AR10 lowers.
One is the DPMS pattern and the 2nd is the Armalite pattern.

One big distinction is the Armalite pattern was developed after the Assault weapon ban of 1994 when Armalite built an AR10 lower that would use modified M14 magazines that would hold over 10 rounds while other companies kept the "original" pattern that I hear is refered to as the DPMS pattern.

I understand PMag magazines will not work in the Armalite pattern but will work in the DPMS. Other than the magazine issue, everyting else is the same. Am I off track here? kwg

I to have the R25 in .243 and have to agree its a heavy gun, but my groups are 1/2 inch at 100yds.

Got a buddy that's shooting an Armalite 243 upper/87 V-Max combination (~3/4 MOA groups)/6.5-20x VX-III, and has the best track record on long-range coyotes i've seen so far from 400-almost 800, 1st shots.

He shot one dog facing us though this year with his 308 upper/168 SMK (i think it was) at ~400 yds. and we lost it. Trailed that sucker for 1/2 mile in snow but trail petered out as the snow melted.

Nice lookin rig and groups Smokin Barrel!
That's kind of what I'm looking for...I'm thinking about 20", though. I might be wrong, buy yours kind of looks longer...like a 24"?

If I shoot a 6mm, I'll probably stick with that Dtech .243wssm I have...So, i'm probably just sticking with .308 right now.

I have (2) Remington R-25's in .308 win. and I must admit they are very fun to shoot. I also have a Remington R-15 in .30 Remington AR, they both have their pros and cons. I prefer the .30 RAR over the .308 win for hunting because the .30 RAR is a lighter rifle due to the fact that it is the AR-15 platform vs. the heavier AR-10 platform. Ammo is easier to come by for the .308 win and can be found in any sport shop since it is such a common cartridge and has been around for a very long time. Although ammo for the .30 RAR is readily available online, I have never found any in local sport shops. Another PRO to the .30 RAR is the ammo is rather inexpensive and easily reloaded. You can also find these rifles (NIB) at a few online retailers or gunbroker in the $950 range which is a substantial difference than the AR-10 style rifle. If you are looking for a .30 cal AR style rifle for hunting medium to large game, check out the .30 Remington AR, it shoots 110gr to 150gr bullets like a laser out to 400 yards and I wouldn't hesitate to take a shot on game out to that range with this cartridge. Here is a link to a nice writeup about this rifle.. (Click on the yellow arrows at the top to turn the page)
