308 for Coyotes?

I have a rem 700 in 308 that I am putting a new MCM A3 stock on tomorrow. I want to use this as my rig gun and something else for my walkout.

I have an excelent load worked up for 168 and 175 Sierra HPBT match bullets. They will shoot under a half an inch and I have shot this load for awhile now, so I am very confident in shooting this load. My question is this.......

with the Sierra 168/175 hpbt bullets work well enough on coyotes to drop them consitantly? I usually only use Nosler Bal Tips which I have been very happy with the results on Coyotes. But since I have a great load worked up for the 168/175s I was wondering if this would be good to use or if I should go with another bullet?

I do also have a good load for the Sierra 110s that will also shoot under a half an inch but I have only tested those out to 100 yards. The 175s I can shoot out to 700 without any worries. (not that I plan on shooting a yote that far) but I do trust the 175 more so then any other load I shoot.

The 308 will also only be for night shooting so I would like to not have to worry about the dog going to far since it will only be at night when I shoot them with this load.

I have used my SR-25 .308 on yotes before, there are some bean fields here in Oklahoma that will hold 200-400 acre's of open crop land, and if there is any wind I will pack the .308 knowing it will buck the wind better than my .223. Last time I shot a coyote with the Sr-25 she was 210 yards, When the bullet hits point of aim you will definatly heard the impact with the .30 cals.
With the SMK or the Fed 168gr HPBT they tend to leave a exit wound bigger than Dallas. Unless you get 1 in a million shot and shoot a coyote at 65 yards through the right eye and it in turn exits through the ear cannal leaving absolutely no fur damage, would have been a taxidermist dream come true. One of these days I'm hopping to get a chance to shoot a coyote out to 700-800 yards with my .308 but seems that every time i have my .223 is when the hang up past 500 yards. Personally if someone was looking for a great cal. between the .223 and .308 I would buy the 25-06, shoots 115gr very flat.

Embalmer, I've used 308s on coyotes before, they kill em dead as they can get. Your loads sound good, go for it. Now and then you may have an animal run on you when you know you hit them good. Not an uncommon thing with bigger bullets, you'll usually find them not to far away.

Embalmer,
Your .308 will do the deed. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif However, if there is a concern it would be your background, NOT your's personally. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif That 175gr. bullet will travel 600 to 800 yards accurately, but what all will or could it hit in beyond point A and B?

I sold my cousin my Remington 788 in .308, but it shoots a 110gr. Hornady V-Max bullet in a touching "clover leaf" group at 100 yards, chronographed at 3040 f.p.s. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif If I wanted to save the pelts, I had to shoot 'em in the head. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

If the area your hunting in doesn't raise a concern about what's behind your intended target, then by all means shoot what you're most confident in shooting. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Good hunting, Bowhunter57

any 308 will be plenty for yotes actual lil over kill but unless ur savin fur realy dont matter i havnt actualy hunter yotes long but ive killed quite a few on deer stands on 4wheeler paths and the such you can bring em down easy i find a smaller bullet with faster speeds better velocity does better i use 7mm-08 and 7mm mag somtimes way over kill 7mm-08 i just like watching the chest cavity leaving other side of him and the 7mm mag no excuse sept i like destruction i have to scoopem up with a muck shovel if he aint 200+ yards but thats ok

gday embalmer,
if you cant kill a dog with a .308, you have problems! thats a bloody scrub bull gun, so even if you hit the dogs in the guts youll still kill em. waste of money to shoot at dogs in my opinion, stay with the .223, but the .308 is just too damn big in my opinion

thetoadinpa,
FMJ bullets may not be legal to hunt with in your state.

The .308 kills deer nicely, It will certainly kill coyotes. Though you may get runners, the bullets may not expand, and coyotes are tough. Hell, I use a 17 Remington, and it drops the critters better than any other caliber I have used. I aim for center chest shots.

Embalmer, how far do you shoot at night? I would think that those 110 grain bullets would work.

Aussie Calum,
I agree with you, too much rifle.

Your 308 will kill them dead every time. But I hope you are good with a needle and thread. When I used my 308 for calling all I used were soft point bullets.Your loads will be more than enough for coyotes.

Hey Embalmer! Ya' ever head out to ASR these days? Haven't seen you and Pete out there in quite a while. Just met a great bunch of guys from the 'Hide a couple of weeks ago; we're going to start getting together for shoots at ASR when schedules permit. Some of the guys are going to a 600 yd. match out at the West End Gun Club this Sat.. I'm on vacation for another week and a half; drop me an e-mail if you want to meet up at ASR. Take it easy. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif

I will say only this. Those bullets you listed are "match" bullets and even Sierra doesn't recommend them for hunting. Will they kill? As our most learned bushman was stating most things dead'r than 4 o'clock in the morning. My issue is be careful that the bullet doesn't kill the coyote, the cow behind it, after it goes through the windshield of farmer Brown's Sunday go to meeting truck. I have shot a lot of 107gr MK bullets at long range g-hogs, and I know some have hit the ground and left the county to parts unknown to me. Those bullets are most likely NOT to expand and stop on a 20 lb dog.

Be safe. I am finished now.

God Bless,

Mike

I know of a rancher that use's a .25-06 with the heaviest bullet made for same. The bullet doesn't expand. He isn't worried about saving the hides just killing the coyote. It works for him just fine.

The Nosler 125gr Ballistic Tip is a fantastic round for coyotes and other "varmints" in a 308 if you aren't looking to save the hide....

Out of a 308 rifle you can get great accuracy with it and velocity often is way over 3K. I use 50gr of Varget ahead of a Federal GMM primer in Federal Gold Medal brass and get 5/8" groups. This load may not be safe in your rifle... Consult a published loading manual.

You can also substitute the Speer 125gr TNT bullet. It's cheaper, more explosive, and just as accurate.

btw... With these bullets, you also have a much lower chance of a bullet going on to do in Farmer Brown's cow or pickup as they usually break up on impact with almost anything but it ALWAYS pays to know your backstop.
