.308 reloads for bolt gun?

i load for a buddy's 308 and his gun likes the hornady 150gr sst with varget powder. not sure off the top of my head on the amount but it was a grain or two over start.

I have the Rem SPS Tactical with 20' barrel. It loves the 125 gr. serria spitzer with 47 gr. of varget. Not that fast of a load (2950), but lazer accurate, and I haven't heard any of the dogs hit with it complain. Matter of fact, never had one even spin. Suppose I could pump them up a bit, but why wear the barrel.

44.4 grains of Varget, Sierra 168 grain Match King, Federal 210 Match primers, Neck-sized uniformed brass.

Not a barn burner but very accurate in my .308 Win Howa Supreme Varminter. I have busted many jackrabbits at well over 200 yards with this load.

It would help to know what you plan to shoot with it. Targets, varmints, predators, deer? The .308 is a pretty versatile caliber, & can do all these with the right load.
For me, a good all around load is Varget or Reloader 15 with Hornady 150 SP or 165 Nosler Accubonds but I use mine mostly for whitetails.

Marlin's page, here, which you probably already saw states 1 in 12".

Out of my Rem 700 in .308 with a 1 in 10" twist I get very decent groups with 41.0 of H335 and 168grn NBT, FWIW.

Good luck.

my savage shoots any bullet well. i use 125 gr nosler ballistic tips with IMR 4895 on coyotes. (not fur friendly but kills them good). with the 165/168 gr bullets i use reloader 15. it shoots very well!

Utah,
I believe that once you get your rifle, you'll have to work up her "Sweet Load." I use the same components and load as SodakJim, but use a lesser powder amount (42 grs) of Varget because I shoot at 100 yds. In fact, this past summer while testing, my older Ruger M77V MKII put together a three shot group of .178 @ 100 yds using the 42 gr load. Best group that baby has shot in the 27 yrs I've owned that rifle. Also I was using Lapua brass. Good luck with that new toy!

I have found Varget to be one of the best performers in bolt and gas operated semi's using 168 and 178 gr bullets.

Start low and work your way up until you find what you are looking for.

Havent tried Varget but hear good things about it with the 308. My standby loads are 45.5gr of IMR4064 and Speer 150gr Hot-Cors I've also shot a box of the hornady 150gr sst's with IMR4064 at 45gr, all using Win WLR primers and Win brass. I picked up some Ramshot TAC for use in my 223 and so far have ran 45gr of the TAC with the 150gr speer hot cors in the 308.

All have been very accurate and absolutely hammer hogs and deer Ive shot with it. The 150gr SST's were a little finicky but once I got within 0.5gr of 45 they really shinned. I have to kinda pick my shots with the SST's as they punch a big hole in things if your wanting to save it for meat. Had a couple of 100lb-ish hogs that ran out in front of me one time and it looked like they had been hit with a mack truck with the SST's.

Thanks everyone. I have not purchased it yet and yesterday saw a savage that I may be interested in as well. Just trying to keep it on the cheap side.

In my 18 1/2-inch Model 600, 46 grains of Varget behind a 165 grain Hndy Spire Point shoots great and clocks 2650fps. I have also heard good things about RL 15, but have never tried it.

My favorite load for a 308 is with the 125-135g weight(I don't use this rifle for long range work).

748 with this weight bullets will print a single ragged hole with very fast velocity and flat trajectory.

49.5-52.0g of 748 with a Fed 210, CCI 200, or Rem 9 1/2 will shoot bullets of this weight in the 3100+ fps are with groups less than 1/2".

130g Tripple shocks at 3100 fps is no slouch load on deer, and 125g TNT's for varmints...good to go.

Check this site for some really good loads, shooters list their loads: http://www.centerfirecentral.com/viewer.html

Two of the best powders for the 308 are varget and reloader 15. I tried tac and think it will work, but when I shot a .25" group with varget my experimenting stopped.
