.308 vs 30-06

I have owned two Ruger M77s over the years and have noticed the same thing. Maybe the shape of the stock?

With the proper bullets not a stretch.

I've got an 06 its older Remmington model four I belive. I would prefer the 308 any day. The 30-06 is less accurate drops more, kicks harder and is quite a bit louder than my .308.

I do not regret my choice at all and hope this helps with your decison. (.308 is still fairly reasonable compared to the hot-shot rounds) I paided 16$ for a box o 20 a couple days ago.

how does the .30-06 drop more? if your shooting the same bullet weight the .30-06 will be flatter due to the fact that its going faster its not really noticeable in hunting situations but the .30-06 shoots flatter. i'd say stick to the .30-06 no reason for a slightly slower version

Well first off the MPa is significantly higher on a .308. I guess another thing I should have clarified was that a lighter buller may be used due to the KE transfer differences. My .308 is much more accurate than one of my friends similar set up (BBL 700) 30-06 with both of the guns Rem 700's both adjusted to about 3 lbs I can shoot significantly tighter grouping with the .308. I'm not trying to diss the 30-06 I have one and killed my first deer with it it is a great cartridge but I would pick my .308 any day. The higher twist most commonly found in .308 1 in 12 opposed to the 1 in 10 commonly found in 30-06 stabilizes most of the bullet weight choices I use on deer and dogs much better than the 30-06 does.

what IS MPa? i'm confussed as to how the kintic energy transfer is higher in a .308 when the .30-06 has more foots lbs of energy (not a big diffrence but still there) does the .308 have voodoo powers i'm unaware of?

It's not just you. I started to make a similar post earlier today, but then decided "Naw, not worth it".

Sorta like the fella who told me his .308 shot perfectly flat all the way out to 500 yards. I just said, "If you say so."

Some things aren't worth arguing about.

I owned both at one time and after I sold them I looked to buy another 30cal. I choose the 06 over the 308 for the same reason listed here earlier and that is the 06 handles the heavier bullets better. I put a Houge pillar bedded stock and after market trigger in my 77 MKII and with 168 gr. hand loads it shoots better than I can shoot it. It shoots MOA at 100 yds easily so I do not see accuracy as an issue and neither is recoil it is very manageable. Nothing wrong with the 308 it is un disputably a great round I just didnt see the benefits to choosing it over the 06. I have bought a 300 RSAUM since then though so if I had it to do over I might choose the 08 next time. Guess its tit for tat just what you like.

Given the choice between these two, I would let the deal I found on the rifle make the decision for me.

I now have three M77 MkII's. Only one has the original stock, and it's a 6mm284 so it doesn't kick anyways. Ironically, I had a Remington 700 LVSF .22-250 that was less pleasant to shoot off the bench.

My other two Rugers are a .338 Win Mag with a Hogue stock, and a newly acquired .308 Win with the Hogue stock that has the full length bedding block.

I am now fairly intrigued with what the short .30 can do with stuff in the 155 to 175 grain range. I'd personally probably sway towards the .308 all other things being equal.

For moose I'd grab my .338 instead. Same for BIG bears. Regular ole black bears the .308 and '06 are plenty.

That reminds me of the guy across the street. A couple of days ago he said that his 7.62 X 54R had a foot of drop at 700 yards.
