.308 Win vs. .30-06 Spr for big game

Exactly right! In a T3, I don't know why one would get a .308 over a .30-06. The 308's short-action benefits are gone, so why not just get the .30-06?
 
Its kind of like which is better the 300 wsm or the 300 win mag. One has a long action one has a short action. One can handle heavier bullets quite well the other can be restricted to lighter bullets. They will both kill the same animal in the same situation with good shot placement. Ballistics are close. It all depends on what you want tell your hunting buddies you hunt with. They are both really close just depends on you.
 
The difference in 308 to 30-06 is about the same from 30-06 to 300 win
mag. I don't see how any of the three are comparable 170 fps is a lot of
difference in speed. And with a 165 grain that is about the spread between
these three.
 
ha, I thought this thread died. I got the 30-06 and it shoots lights out. Everything I've shot out of it shoots under 1moa w/factory rounds.

No, really, it's not unless you're talking a 200+ grain bullet in the .308.

Here's a max load of IMR 4350 with 165 gr. bullet in each one from my Speer manual:

.308 Win. 48.0 gr. 2545 fps
30-'06 56.0 gr. 2658 fps
300 Win. Mag: 73.0 gr. 3260 fps

113 fps vs. 602 fps is pretty far from "the same".

Go look at hornady's light magnum load data.

My hornady manual lists 2600 as max for a 308 165,168 grain with several
powders, 2900 as max for the 06 with 4 powders and 3200 as max for the
300wm with 1 powder rl22, the rest are maxed at 3100. So we can pick and
choose what manual but in the end manufactured ammo is much faster these
days.

I love the federal power shocks our of my Howa .308 they shoot so good I almost don't see the sense in trying to reload anything better. In fact I never can get it to do better with hand loads. Close but never better.

my 06 is loaded pretty hot and i'm getting 2950 ft/sec. i dont see any advantage at all of using an 06 over a .308 out to average shooting ranges (200-300yds). i've seen too many guys shoot guns too big for them and they flinch so the step up in horsepower makes them less likely to make a good shot. the 06 does have some advantages when you get out a lot farther but how many people shoot past 600 yds. if you're debating the 2 just go with the .308 and you'll have plenty of gun.

Read some articles written by Chuck Hawks...

I really enjoy reading comments in these type of forums, as there is a lot of knowledge and inforation provided; however, I'd recommend taking every one with a grain of salt.
 
I've had LOTS of 308 & 30-06 over the years including Tikka's. I've never had any of my 30-06's match or beat my 308's for accuracy. Close but no cigar.

As far as bullet weights between the two if I needed to go heavier than 180 grains I'd choose a large caliber than 30.

308 for me.
