I have a model 16 savage 243 i coyote hunt with. I was running a 4-16-44 vortex viper hs on it but did not like it for hunting. I prefer to keep atleast up to 12 power on this gun for fun as it is very accurate so i shoot alot. With that being said i want a good hunting scope as well. Want to stick with the 30mm due to rings on it. I am leaning towards a 4-12 leupold vxr looks to have good reviews. I have 4 burris scopes ff2 c4 2-e1 so was looking at possibly a mtac also. The veracity is just to heavy i think. What other good optics are out there in the $600 and down range i should look at

You can simply use 1" ring inserts to reduce from 30mm to 1" if you must absolutely keep the 30mm rings. Doesn't make sense to me, but it's your gun.

I had a Burris mtac I really liked. The only reason I got rid of it was for target turrets and a zero stop. They have very nice glass at least as good as your vortex viper.

I think you should like that scope I talked to Burris and the guy told me the c4s are comparable glass wise to a mtac.

That's exactly what I had on my Model 16 243 but since I am getting rid of that rifle I have it on my 6.5 Grendel Build now. I do like it a lot for the price but know I'll want to upgrade at some point.

I'd caution against the 4-12 in the VX-R simply because the FOV is not comparable to other 4-12 scopes. I'm not sure why either but if you look at the specs it notes FOV as 21.2-10 for the 4-12x40 model. Most 4-12's that I've looked at are in the 27-28 on the low mag range and the 9-10 on the high mag range. So you're losing FOV on your low mag range which wouldn't be a positive for predator hunting. I've been looking pretty hard at the 2-7x33 and 3-9x40 in the VX-R series myself. My $0.02.

I know it's not a higher end scope , but i have a nikon active target recticle in 3-9x40 on my savage model 11 predator hunter. I really like this recticle it is fast and is pretty acurate for me.

I just googled that reticle...It looks like Nikon took everything bad about the BDC, and made it worse. I cannot imagine a more poorly designed reticle could be designed if one tried.

I imagine that there are people who do not like the recticle. For me it works really well! I have it on a savage model 11 predator hunter and shoot the 58 grain vmax. I have shot coyotes from 25 yds to 423 yds with it.

I run a 30mm tube on my 243 coyote rifle.

I'm sure that there are plenty out there that would disagree with my scope choice, but it works for me. It's a 3-15x50 in FFP. Three power is useless, so... I keep it parked at about 6 to 7 power. It's worked on yotes from 12 to 460yrds. If I ever get a chance I will go farther

It is not that i did not like it for shooting but i feel that in low light it could be better and that at 16 it could be clearer. I now have it on a savage fcp-sr 308 and it fits the bill pretty well but i am thinking about selling it and buying a HS-t for the 308

I would consider this if you want to stay around 14 power. Of course you would have to get ring inserts. For my eyes these scopes are easily the best in low light in their price range.
