I am going to look into www.accuracyunlimited.com build it. There is other stuff but I think that is about the basics. I think it will be the 338 norma mag.

Over at the above site there is always actions & top name barrel blanks on the FS forum.
338 Norma mag is going to be slick vs the 338L.

Its all in the shooter behind the gun IMO. Maybe it will shoot better with a custom bbl, but if the person behind it can't do the job without strapping it to any kind of a rest its going to reflect downrange of course as we all know.

All things equal, except one custom, one savage, I think the custom would typically come out on top. There could be a "golden goose" out there, but I believe the custom will be more consistant and repeatable. JMHO.

I am in the dreaming/planning stage at this time. I have been for some time, but now its time to turn this into a reality. I probably won't start moving on this till after christmas and then its going to be a 2-3 year project. Accuracy unlimited did some work for me before and I have no complaints. I like the rem 700, the same reason I like the ar15, 1911, 10/22, lots of parts and its a good rifle. The 338 norma sounds pretty awesome, there was a time when I was eyeballing a 338-375 ruger. I think I need to list all the parts from top to bottom and begin their.

Does anyone know of an alternative to the savage action that won't cost as much and I would be able to assemble? Thanks for the thoughts.

338 Lapua and cheap do not go together! Since it seems you are worried about cost so much my thoughts are to stop thinking about a 338! Unless you plan on building/buying one just so you can say you have one.

Also you would be better off just buying the 338LM from Savage and selling the parts you don't want! And no Savage won't sell you the 338LM action.

The use of the C word! We all know the magic is in the barrel and yes even the AFTERMARKET barrels have crappy ones too!

So yes ALL things equal a Savage will stick right with a "custom" rifle! Again it's not the action, barrel, glass, or trigger that make it happen it's the shooter!

Op-
I went with the NM because I did ALOT of research, I can seat the bullets much further than you could with the lapua while still running mag length, and I'm getting some great velocity with quite a bit less powder than the LM needs, so in the long run that will save me some $$$... the Norma is an accurate shooter.

I did some more research on it last night. I continue to like what I see. I read some stuff off of snipers hide. I looked in all of my reloading manuals and they had nothing. I guess its because the cartridge is so new. Will a standard magnum action bolt face work? What powder and load do you use?

you need a larger bolt face than the standard magnum bolt... I replaced my 300wm bolt with a PTG bolt and it has a lager diameter, I believe the diameter of the NM bolt face is .585, and the standard magnums ie. 300wm is .540...
I used a number of powders, H1000, Retumbo, but the RL-22 and VVN570 had the best results, I still need to do some more work, but I've been using about 90grains of N570 and the 300gr OTM, with good results.

Thanks for the help.
