338 Lapua vs. 338 Win Mag?

I'm not new into the world of reloading but have a question about these two calibers.
I have a 338 Win Mag and was wondering if I get the same bullet as the Lapua going same speed out of my win mag then where is the advantage with the Lapua? Same FPS and same bullet then shouldn't that equal same performance? Just curious.!!??

I don't think you will be able to get the same speeds with the same bullet. The Lapua will shine every time. Unless your not loading it to it full potential...Jason

You mean like if your were to get a 223 to get the same speed as a 22-250?

come on man.... silly question. So your answer is yes same, but it won't.

I think that you don't have enough cartridge to get that velocity to start. If you could get it it probably wouldn't be very nice to shoot and your brass wouldn't last. Like running a 7mag to stw. Might do it but at what other cost? Why not just dump the win mag and get a lapua if that's what your wanting to do? Or Ive heard great things about the 17 HMR!

Would be silly to even try.

The Lapua is made to shoot the long and heavy high BC bullets.

On average, there is about 300fps between the two. I don't think there is a way (at least a safe way) to obtain that much difference out of the Win Mag. It would be silly to even attempt it. That Win Mag will only handle so much before someone gets hurt.

I reload for both. The 338 Lapua isn't the 'rock star' of the rifle range for nothing.
My biggest item between both calibers is the unnecessary belt on the win mag. The other is, (223 vs 22-250), you can load down to the lapua mag. You can't load up to the win mag. If you have a load with the win mag you like, I would say good enough. But if you are wanting to go long, the new lapua platforms are more set up to do that instead of a 'hunting platform' in the older win mags I have had.
I had some awesome results with the 300 berger in a 338 lapua savage LRH @ 600 yards.
The remington 338 lapua MLR wasn't far behind. But because of the cheek piece on the savage, I was in a better position to hold more steady.
Have fun!
