I saw a 35 Whelen cartrige for the first time today and was wondering what it is good for hunting and at what range? Is it a very popular and versatile round and does anyone here use it?
It's mainly a big game cartridge(big meaning bigger than deer size animals.) It is not a good long range choice, as the trajectory is not very flat, but for something like elk within 300 yards, it works well.
Jack said it perfectly, but it will work fine for deer. If you plan on hunting in heavy cover its perfect one shot one kill. Remington makes 2 loads for this cartridge.
One shot that I will never forget is a shot on a Mule deer buck at 200 yds with a 35 Whelen loaded with a 225g Hornady with a max load of h322. I shot him while sitting in the truck and everyone in the truck was impressed at how it "flattened" the large buck, not to mention the huge hole in him. Hard to believe how stupid Mule deer are in comparrison to hunting a coyote. Too bad that a coyote is not better eating.
The 35 Whelen is a Shore Nuff mash'em flat magnum type of gun on deer, and would probably be the Mack Daddy on hogs.
I sold the gun to one of the guys in the truck because it would be an over kill on yotes.
