Ive had a mint High Gloss Super 14 Contender barrel in this chambering sitting here for two years. Thought I would break it out and give it a whirl.

First, anybody currently shooting this? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused1.gifI would love to here some input from you regarding loads.

Second, as ammo is vertualy non-exsistant for this I am consisdering getting some dies and loading for it myself. What dies would you recommend and whats the proceedure to produce loads for this bad-boy?? Also powder recomendations would be appreciated greatly.

Thanks for any thought's!! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif Dave

I had one of these back in the late 70's. Cases are formed from 30-30 cases that are cut off, ran thru a set of case forming dies and then fire formed with cream of wheat.

I hated makeing cases for that gun. Mine had a 10 inch bbl and it shot well enough. I killed a nice moose in Alaska with it, but then along came a trade and it left.

I believe RCBS makes a set of case forming dies for it. There is some time involved making cases. I don't think there is anyone making cases or ammo for it though.

have one it kicks like a mule
ripped out my scope mount screws, had to have it redone
i make the brass if you need some

I also have one. Was looking for a 35 rem barrel and found this, a complete contender with dies for less than a barrel so I bought it. My dies are t/c but I think are the old pacific. Anyhow it is a plain 2 die rifle set with a tapered expander. I though they were quite easy to make, more than some wildcats I have. It shoots quite well, am using a hornady bullet made for single shot pistols. It kind of grew on me, will never part with it.

I have not seen one since the eighties, Almost got a contender barrel for it but opted for the 45-70 instead got rid of the whole kit and kaboodle finally on a good trade. Am looking at another TC but will go with rifle chamberings if i do.

I have hunted with both 30 and 357 Herrett's for many years. The new bullets that area available will shoot much better than the 357 bullets made for revolvers. It should do 2" or better at 100 yds. Mine are 10" versions.

RCBS, Redding, and about all the others have dies for this round.

I had the 357 Herrett for a while and took a mule deer with it. The first frame that I had it on was the old style and it stretched the frame. No, really, T/C told me that the hinge pin holes had beed stretched and they sent me a brand new one. It kicked like a mule, so my flinching decreased the decent accuracy it had. I didn't think that the brass were tough to resize but I did have to trim them back a lot. Ballistically, I think there are much better options.

Got the 30 herrett. Case making is the same. I use an RCBS case trim die to form my cases. Just run a 30-30 hull in the die and cut the top off with a hacksaw. File it down smooth and chamfer and deburr. From there I load and fire. Now I have a fully formed case. I size only the necks and get a good snap on closure. I have some hulls that have been fired 10-15 times and looks like they will go more. I use the ssp bullets from Hornady for hunting and have been quite satisfied.

Amen on the recoil. not brutal, but definately will test the rings. It is not uncommon to have the scope creep forward. I went to a three ring base to stop the creeping.

Thanks guys,

How would you compare the recoil to the 375.JDJ? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused1.gif I fired four or five through that barrel and put it back in the box (Permenantly) /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif. From a standing position you could see the grass lay down flat out to ten feet in front of you. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shocked.gif Not to mention my palm felt like a M-80 went off.
