358 win, 225gr ttsx, varget powder hunting load development

My new elk rifle is a 358 winchester. Favorite bullet is the ttsx (225gr tsx for this caliber) and ive moved all my loads (if possible) to varget for simplicity. Downside, i cant find data for that combo. So off to make my own!

Anyways i mad test loads between 43-47 gr of powder. The 47gr is a compressed load, more than im comfy with but its a test load for a reason.

Range day today. The 43gr load had noticeably more thump than my previous function testing loads with other bullets. However it turned in less than acceptable groups, good enough to drop an elk but definitely not worth bragging about.

Green dot for this load.

Then i moved to 45gr, orange dots. A bit more thump, and *maybe* a different feel on the bolt. Im not sure if the bolt lift was heavier or i was imagining it. But the group tightened substantially. No other signs of pressure. My bragging group for the day.

I save so many stickers when im shooting well

. Low left is me, its always me. Otherwise 4 in 1 hole, 1" squares so another sub moa group from my elk rifle, makesme happy. I always screw up one in every string. Shot 4 of 5 this time. I honestly should just pitch the first round into the hill so i can keep a good group.

Its going to be my load this year, might tweak a bit next year but im heading out in a week or two and this is really good enough.

I did a safety shot of the 47gr, that is protect myself and put the bullet into the berm. This produced a heavy bolt , so 1 and done for that load. Ill dismantle the rest. Im counting about 45 as the max for this rifle ammo combination.

This is the first rifle i "built", i like it quite a bit

. Savage action and a stubby er shaw barrel.

I'm hesitant to tell you all of what I know, and certainly am in no way telling you to try a larger powder charge. Especially if you feel for ANY reason that you were nearing max, and given your "heavy bolt" comment. PLEASE DON'T load a higher charge weight.

For the sake of discussion only:

There are reasons why certain powders are not listed/recommended for certain loads. As in this case, you are compressed @47gr. But what I can tell you, is that you could stuff another 2-3 gr. Varget in there, and still be fine as to pressures, IMO. In other words, you would run out of case capacity before you "ran out of pressure" with said powder, IMO. Meaning, that other powders would most likely be a better choice for optimum performance.

---I know you are thinking of it, but don't do it. Besides, you said you felt a stiff bolt, and all rifles are different......

No worries on me going heavier, the tsx is a looooong bullet. I know i can compress it further but once i feel resistance on the lift im done

im more concerned with how the bullet performs than squeezing a few more fps out of the cartridge. I figure its no different than starting light on a load from a book, no guarantees on any rifle.

I stuffed 49.5 or 50gr into a BLR and no pressure signs. It was as compressed as it could be.

Don't do it though....

Unrelated. I talked to a guy who was on his way to the range who was trying to speed up his bullet. According to him he topped the brass, seated a bullet, pulled the bullet, topped again, and then a 3rd time. I don't know what caliber etc, but he didn't look too experienced but he knew more than anyone around him.

I don't know if he was BS'ing or not but I asked what range he was going to, wanted to make sure I wasn't there at the same time

Depending on the setup, there can be a fine line between better performance and a pipe bomb next to your face

2nd of my 4 hair up my butt calibers. I decided it sounded like a good idea so I built one.

First 2 were 460 rowland pistols, 4th is a 20 practical I'm working on now.

I like quirky, and the 358 isn't a wildcat but it's so not mainstream to most that it fits the bill
