.358 Winchester Ammo

I have a couple of rifles in this caliber, one a BLR and the other a custom bolt gun and when I began shooting this caliber I purchased a couple of boxes of factory ammo for comparison purposes as well as the brass. The factory ammo came with the Winchester Silver Tip bullet and I can't find them as reloading components anywhere. I believe they were supposed to be the cat's meow back when, but with the many innovations and improvements in bullet manufacturing I feel certain there are better choices now. Does anyone have any experience with that bullet and if so what are you loading now that provides an equal level of performance? BTW I have seen boxes of the same factory ammo on ebay for $60 to $70 per box as "collectable". Am I missing something here?

The May issue of Shooting Times has an article on the 358 Win. Never used one myself, but saw a buck shot with the 358 out of my friends 99. Pretty impressive. You can form brass from 308 W brass.

I had trouble with the Winchester brass having too thin necks and had to use reformed 308 brass. In my 358 I really liked IMR 3031 powder and the 250 grain Speer bullet. Thumps everything hard, is accurate and expands nicely. Win 748 was too bulky but 4198 is good for the 180-200 grain bullets. I also had very good results with the 200 grain Hornady Spire point.

I has one for years and used the Sierra 200 gr.round nose bullet and loved it.I pushed it harder than the factory Winchester 200's and had better results.I still use the Sierra 200 gr.in my 350 Mag.and I have never lost a whitetail with this bullet.
