Hey video guys, If a hunter was to want to purchase a video camera for filming his hunts, what brand and options should I look for. I know if I ever want to have them editted for any reason I should get a 3CCD miniDV type for color quality and simplicity. What else should I look at. Also please keep in mind I am a fireman, price vs. quality.

What's the fireman gig got to do with it? You going to make a helmet cam out of it, so we need to find one that's fireproof too. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

No actually I had so much fun hunting in front of keekee and canines camera, I thought I would try to film my own hunts. I figure what better way to anylize my stands and have the chance to watch the coyotes reacting to my calling efforts. A good optical zoom ability is a plus, especially if you get to see the predators at longer distances. Remote mic. ability is also a nice feature! Having long record time batteries is nice also, as an add on. Nothing worse than lookin' through the view finder at an incoming critter only to have a flashing "low battery" indicator in view also! A quality fluid head tripod helps keep every thing steady and smooth, for better quality footage! The larger lenses cameras have, the better they are at gathering light, especially nice early a.m. and late p.m. The nicer camera's can actually "see" better in low light than the human eye can!From what I have seen, SONY is the leading video camera in the hunting world, with CANON being probably second.
 
i know absolutly nothing about video cameras,hell im lucky to see and find something in my scope let alone some hunter always asking me,,,are ya on him,,are ya on him yet /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif
hell im blind in one eye and i have a bad habit of still trying to use it to see with /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shocked.gif,,but i will keep AN EYE OUT on this post so maybe i can find out if they make a left eye camera /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smiliesmack.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused1.gif

I like the small compact camera's Iam lucky in today's market there are lots of small compact camera's to choose from.I spent month after month talking to people and studying before buying a cam.

First thing I I learnt was there is not many people to get advice from on filming hunts to many variables everyone is differnt.My first cam was the GS 400 by Panasonic (Approx $1200.00 My Second cam was the AG-DVC30 by Panasonic (Approx $2000.00) my 3rd was a AG-DVX 100B by Panasonic (Approx $4000.00)

If I could only keep one of these cams it would be the DVC30 it has the best manual controls and a good solid 16X lens.The DVX100B is a very good cam but only 10X optical I only use it in doors interview's ETC.The little 400 is a great cam for the buck I can match it to the higher cams.When things are rainy or nasty this little cam gets the nod.

Wireless mics and shotgun Mic's are a must I have to much footage not usable when I didn't have them.You want manual controls Auto controls do not cut it in the field.

The biggest thing you have to deal with is the fact the number of coyotes you are calling and killing now will be cut by 50%-70%.The reason is you have to set up different when filming.
Keep in mine this is the first coyote hunting video I have ever tried shooting Iam sure as I go There will be many more changes in my equipment.

Good fluid head tripod and a Panasonic GS 250 would be a great combo for good footage.They can be had together for around $1000.00 If I was starting over that is were I would start.

I agree with Plumbrich, the Panasonics are good. We use to have a DVC80 and loved it. If size isn't a matter you could go with a Full size shoulder cam like a Canon XL-2 or a XL-1 if you can find one on ebay. All the ones I'm talking about are Prosumer cams.
Something a little small perhaps?
Canon GL-2 - compact, sort of -Mini-DV 3ccd and my fav. 20x optical zoom.
Most of the Panasonics and the Sonys run at about 12x optical.
The cams mentioned above run in $2000.00 range.
I also agree that a good tripod with a nice head is a must.
Now you need a hunting partner that can carry all this stuff for you.
