3X9 and accuracy

Just curious, how accurately can you shoot at 100 yards with a 3X9 scope? If you worked up a .3" load at 100 yards using a 24x scope then switch to a 3X9 scope, how accurately could you shoot that load? Surely someone besides me has really tried this.

I'm more accurate with the 8 by 32 I use for ground squirrels than the 3 by 9 I run for coyotes in the fall and winter. I don't believe the gun is any less accurate, but the higher power seems to let me aim easier. Keep in mind that at 61 my eyes aren't what they were when I was younger so perhaps it's just the being able to see the target better.

I'm shooting dime and nickel sized groups with the 3 by 9 and just a little smaller with the 8 by 32, usually set on 25 power or higher depending on how hot it is.

One thing to keep in mind with higher power scopes is mirage from heat waves coming off the ground can actually make shooting the higher powers a real pain.

I have an accurate Savage (is that redundancy??) that when I switched the 3-9x to an 8.5-25x the groups shrunk at least 1/4" at 100yds. When shooting at 365yds it definately helps and gives confidence due to the target not looking so far away

Recently I switched it back to the 3-9x and the groups opened up. The scope is a decent little bushnell sportsman with sharp optics, AO and target turrets (normally on my 10-22).

If you've shot nothing but 3-9 and done well then keep it that way....if you've not compared (objectively) and want to improve the equipment try something higher powered in magnification.

Is that statement designed to amuse, or is it this years oxymoron???

The words "decent" and "sharp optics" cannot grammatically coexist in the same sentence with "bushnell sportsman".

These little scopes have more parallax than a stray dog has fleas.

Your correct, but he did say it had an AO. Still, not my favorite scope.

I've used a Leupold 1.5X5 on my 17Rem. and .223 for Fox/Coyote hunting, going on 27yrs. now. I can shoot under an inch at 100yds. quite easily with them. Recently I replaced one of them with a Browning 2X7 to try out this season.

I mounted a 2x7 Leupold VXII on my 17 Remington Yesterday..

I ran out to the range last evening to sight in..after a few shot's @ 25 yards..then a few more @ 95 yard's to zero..i shot this group..to finalize for upcoming coyote hunt's..[note]the Leupold 2x7 @ 7 power is actually 6.6 power.the bulls eye pictured is 1 1/2"

shooting group's is kinda fun,i'm not hung up on group size's..if it's moa..i'm good..less than moa i'm thrilled !! as a hunter i prefer lower powered scope's..

My father and I shoot his savage rifles mounted with Mueller Eradicator scopes on them. We used to crank those things up to 25x all the time at 100yds. But we both discovered that setting the power lower (6-9x), we have less shake, less mirage, and actually kept the same size groups.

I have no problem shooting 1/4" groups, sometimes even less with a leupold vx3, 2.5-8 on my triple deuce. Magnification doesn't mean your going to shoot small groups, if your load is accurate, it should shoot the same size groups at 8x or 20x.

CatShooter,

I had my reply all typed out in my head till I read your post. I believe you plagiarized my thoughts.

I fess up - I done plagiarized your thoughts /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Here's a few more pic's regarding the 17 remington & a 3x9 scope..the orange bulls eye's in these pic's are 1"

i'm not a very good benchrest shooter..i only try..

@ least i don't post the same picture of the same group everytime /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

here's a pic of the "high tech" range i use /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif
the shooting lane's vary from 50-95 yard's..it work's pretty well.

sorry to bore everyone with pic's..i'm just havin a little fun.

One problem for me is the reticle on my leupold 3x9 vs leupold 24/36x. If you look at the leupold 6xAO scope they use in HBR at 100/200yds it's the same type reticle they use in BR match shooting.

Do you do this consistently ?
I assume you dial it up to 5 power.
I am not doubting you, but my 4x scope is an obstacle to getting small groups at 100yds.
I just can't see a 1 in. orange dot too well with 4 power at 100 yds.

Are you dialing it up to 9X to get these groups ?
Thanks.

That's why I'd said it was on the 10-22. The first and original 3-9 on the .270 was a simmons.

The bushnell has an AO and does ok but it's going to get replaced sometime later. It's not my primary rifle....that's the .257Roy with the 8.5-25x glass.

By the way, the Bushnell really does have good optics.

I have the same scope...it's the Eradicator. I keep it up on 25x as long as it's daylight enough and watching the open field I sit on. It's really a neat scope.

As for the shaking on 25x.....hate too break it to you but you will be shaking just as bad on 8.5x /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I do turn it up to 5X when I'm shooting it for groups at 100yds. It normally sits on 3X when I'm hunting. I have a pretty good bench and rest setup, so lower powers aren't much of an obstacle. I guess it also helps that I shoot about 500rds. a week from the bench with my rimfires at 50yds.

PineCone..

yes of course i'm dialing the scope to 9X..

using a 4X scope i'd suggest using a 1 1/2" orange dot..

a 1" dot is difficult to see @ low power..
