3X9 and accuracy

I think magnification does help on certain types of targets. What i usually do if i am shooting a lower power scope is pick a bigger target that enables me to align the reticle better. There are plenty of targets available that you really dont have to focus on where the crosshairs meet but just align the crosshairs with the target. I have shoot some super groups with low power scopes this way. On the other hand, if i am shooting a 24X with a fine wire i will just use 1/4" stick on dots for targets.

Hey Catshooter, I checked out the photo of the floppy disc and I have my doubts about that one! Not that anyone can hit a disc at 405 yards, but to put three in the same hole? Now come on! That would be impossible!

It's not the same hole... it's three holes overlapping.

Would you like to contact one of the witnesses? If so, I'll get you his e-mail address.

This was out of a cheap ol Stevens 200 topped with a VXI 3-9. I think it is just under "minute of coyote" at 100 yards. 5 shot group.

Pinecone,
I cant shoot at orange dots either, but I do well on black squares, when I shoot low power scopes, where I can line up my crosshairs.
I shot this 3 shot group the other day while sighting in my AR, the scope is a 1.5x5 Burris. I dont normally save 3 shot groups, but I was happy with this one, a quarter inch at 100 yards with a 5X scope. I probably wouldnt be able to do that again.....

To get back on track...

Remember that the Palma guys shoot at 1,000 yds and use IRON sights, and they can their shots in a 10" circle, and most of them in a 5" circle.

Same with the "F" class shooters - same size "X" ring - it was 10" but they had to reduce it because everyone was getting all "X"s.

So if it can be done with iron sights, then a low power scope can surely do it.

The ability to shoot small groups has more to do with the ability to put the hairs in the same spot each time.

Lets say that the target is a white disk that is 5" in diameter, at 200 yds.

In a 24x scope, with a 1/16 moa crosshair, what do you aim at?

Without a small dot on the plate, you are just pointing in open space. You can never find the same aiming spot again.

But lets say that you have a 2x scope with a thick 2 moa cross hair.

The disk will look like 2.5 moa, and the cross hair will cover the white disk and leave four tiny white dots in each corner.

Your eye will subconsciously move the crosshairs until the four dots are the same size.

The groups with the scope at 24x will be larger than the groups shot at 2x.

I have a Colts SP-1 CAR with a Colt 3x scope (FAT cross hairs). When I first tried zeroing it, I got Godawful groups.

When I found red sticky on dots that were just a little larger that the crosshairs, group testing the rifle was easy, and the groups were ~as expected.

Maybe someone else can add something constructive to keep this going...

Lungbuster you are correct..

many provided usable information.

you have seen the pic's i've provided,i have more if needed.

although i admit i'm not @ the skill level of some here,i do try.

many on this forum are all talk, with no fact's to support them.

to those out there wondering i'd suggest shooting a low powered scope & don't look back /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif

That's the plus with the Mueller Eradicator. It has a 1/16moa dot that helps with "spotting". Great for hunting as it's also illuminated and not to bad for long distances. I really like it for the shooting you are speaking of where I practice with a deer silhouette....no bullseyes on real deer....just put the dot on it and shoot. The distance where I set the deer sil is anywhere from 350-375yds.

Just so you fellas know CatShooter and I was ribbing each other behind the curtains so chill out! Nothing more than teasing each other, thats all! Boy some of you fellas thin skined.

I'm sorry... who you talkin about??

Not me!!

Be man enough to stand up and quit lying.

Actually, I told the little creep that I'd verbally rip his lungs out if he called me a liar again.

But I didn't need to do that - he did it all by his foolish self.

.

O.K. CatShooter I see where this is really going! First of all I never called you a f-ing liar, no but what you really are is an a-hole pal!! Thought this was all fun and games between you and I, maybe I misunderstood you, as you can see I was only joking around and then I see this liar , and man enough business well I can clearly see you have no sense of humor. Thats all I got to say to you!! [beeep] I even complimented him on his skill after he explained it to me, and he comes out here and bashes me? I believe I am dealing with two different people, I dont know.
