4.5-14x40 or 3-9x40 getting ready to order Nikon Coyote Special scope

I agree with GregW, go with the 3 X 9. Since it is a Coyote Special reticle and not a Varmint Special reticle.
 
Any 2-7 or 3-9 40mm scope with good eye relief that is repeatable, durable, and clear.

For me, this means Leupold. IMHO, the Leupold VX II 3-9x40 for $299 is one of the best values in scopes there is.

This would get my vote.

I only say this as I have not run the new Nikon reticle and my name is nor Gary Roberson or Byron South...grin...
 
I was up in the air between getting the Nikon prostaff 3-9x40 or the 4.5-14x40 a couple months ago when I was in the market. I chose the 3-9x40 and I'm very happy with it. I used to be under the impression that I would use, or might like, the higher power, and that it would make me a better shot. But after getting out in the field and practicing off of shooting sticks at 100 yards. I found that I tend to shoot better with it on 3 or 4 power! Off of a bench it's different, but for calling, I'd stick in the 3 to 4 power range. Any movement of your rifle, or yourself, on even just 9 power will be greatly amplified and when it comes time to pull up the scope on a potentially moving target, I can't imagine ever using the 9x let alone 14x...

I just ordered the 3-9x40 in mossy oak brush.. think this will work out fine.. thanks for the input
 
I like 4.5-14 my self. You can always put it on 4.5 for low power but you have the option of the 14 power that you wont have with the 3-9. I have never understood the opinion of getting a 3-9 because you dont need high power. The fact you have a 4.5-14 does not mean you have to put it on 14. If you ever intend to shoot prairie dogs you will want the 14 power.
 
My point is that this scope is for fast target acquisition. In my opinion, 4.5 to too high on the low end and 14 is too high on the high end for a scope intended to decrease target acquisition time. IMHO, this scope screams for a 2-7 or 3-9.

If shooting prairie dogs this is about the last reticle you'd want, or I'd want. Fast targer acquisition is probably not the goal of prairie dog glass.

But this is all scope gack. Bottom line is buy what you want to and if it works for you drive it hard.

I just put a Nikon Buckmaster SF Mil dot 6-18x40 on my RRA PP since this is pretty much a prarie dog set up.
Picked it up at Midwayusa for $299 on sale last week.

On my R15 I have a Tasco 3-9x40 duplex wide angle scope as this is my Coyote gun.

The Nikon Coyote scope is just a standard BDC SF scope with a camo dip job on it & a glare cap.
 
There a little higher priced then i thought they would be. I have two Nikon Scopes and there great but i cant see spending that kind of money right now.
 
the solution is simple , get a scope that is 3-12x40!

they cost more money but for me it was worth having 12 power for the bench, testing loads, and occasional Prarie Dog or plinking.

the sightron 3-12x40 big sky is working out great for me and its very lightweight compared to other similar scopes. I like the longer then average eye relief because typicaly for shooting from sticks i have to have the scope back as far as it will go in the rings. This scope allows me more adjustment and its just right when its centered in the rings. it might be out of your price range though.

check out the sightron 3-9x40 big sky its also very lightweight and less money its a good value for a 3-9. optics planet is the best place for a sightron. I think the 3-9 is 300 bucks then u get a rebate ontop of that.

all the big sky scopes have 50 dollar rebate I got my rebate within a few weeks.
