I was up in the air between getting the Nikon prostaff 3-9x40 or the 4.5-14x40 a couple months ago when I was in the market. I chose the 3-9x40 and I'm very happy with it. I used to be under the impression that I would use, or might like, the higher power, and that it would make me a better shot. But after getting out in the field and practicing off of shooting sticks at 100 yards. I found that I tend to shoot better with it on 3 or 4 power! Off of a bench it's different, but for calling, I'd stick in the 3 to 4 power range. Any movement of your rifle, or yourself, on even just 9 power will be greatly amplified and when it comes time to pull up the scope on a potentially moving target, I can't imagine ever using the 9x let alone 14x...
