40 grain Nosler Ballistic Tip?

Have any of you guys had any problems with these? I smoked a coyote with one this evening at 50 yards. Instead of walking over and gettin him I hurried up and made another stand before dark. Went back and looked and the coyotes gone.

He turned to leave so I barked and he turned around to look. He was quartered away from me so I shot behind his shoulder. I hit him solid,I heard it thump him and he went straight down. Didn't spin or yelp or do anything except fall over like he got hit over the head with a hammer. Maybe I just wasn't looking where I thought I shot him. It sure has me confused. That coyote was dead last I saw of it. I'm like 90% sure it was.

Probability of another splash. Slight angles have been an open door for this with light vmax.
Have had much better result with Sierra Blitzking and Nosler/Combined Tech BT, or even Winchester White Box 45 gr JHP.

I smashed one with a 70 nosler BT in 243 and I saw fur fly walked up to it after finding it had a large hole and still wanted to run. Those coyotes are tough.

That's what I was afraid of tripod. I normally shoot the Winchester white box 45gr JHP's but the Nosler 40gr. Ballistic Tips shoot alot better in my AR. I seen it was quartered away a little bit so my plan was to slip the bullet in behind the shoulder to reach vitals instead of trying to go through it. I sat there and watched through my scope in case it got a second wind but I never saw any movement. So I thought it was dead.

It was getting pretty dark when I got back to pick my yote up and make my way back to the truck so I'm hoping the low light just threw me off and was looking in the wrong spot. I'm gonna go check it out tomorrow when I have a better view of my surroundings.

Rasco2469-Yes sir they are very tough. I normally don't leave them unattended like I did this evening but I was just that sure I had made a good hit on him. I'll never do that again.

I must saw I have kills more deer and coyote with my 223 shooting bowler 40 gr BT. It is my go to 223 round. Sage rats don't like it either. Don't give up on the bullet if your gun like them.

I'll definitely give them another try. Even if I can't find my coyote I do like the way they shoot and I didn't exactly have the best shot opportunity on this coyote today and didn't have much time to think about it. So maybe it'll do just fine on the next one. And who knows,it could have done good this time. I just can't quite except that, that coyote could have been wounded to be honest with y'all. I heard that bullet hit so hard there's no possible way I'd have thought it'd crawl away. It about makes me sick that it could have happened and I won't find it.

Tomorrow morning I'm gonna sit where I was when I shot that coyote and walk out in the same direction he fell. He'll be laying right where I shot him. That's the game plan. If he ain't there.....hmmm....I don't know. I'll put my big boy pants on and get over it I guess is what I'll do.

The 40 gr has good speed, flat trajectory and can be devastating.
When stretching it in tough imperfect conditions I have found it to come up short.
Stepping up to 50 gr gets better specs for density and bc.
A 52 gr hollow point is also popular and loaded by many makers Blue Box, Red Box and Ultramax
Byron South did a write up and chose to step up to 60 gr BT in his AR.
Over the years many of us have seen splashes, spinners and runners. Some get up after a period of time.
The .223 just doesnt have the authority of the next larger calibers, so imperfect shots show.

I run Hornady 52gr. BTHP's for bobcats and 55gr. V-Max for coyotes in my bolt gun. And up until recently I was using 45gr. JHP's in my AR. It's a 1:9 twist but won't shoot anything over 45 grains worth a hoot. When you load it up with 50's they start to scatter. The 40 grain Noslers are shootin perfect in it. I really wish it would shoot heavier bullets though. My brother runs 60 grain HP's in his AR and they're very fur friendly. And I've never seen one make a miraculous recovery after getting hit by one either so that's always a plus.Lol

Boy,I'm up early. Too early...That coyote must really be bothering me. You know, they say that dreams have meanings to current situations in your life. I don't know what Miranda Lambert marrying me and then wanting a divorce has to do with anything. Can't be good though.

Did you get to consummate the marriage at least in that dream!!!!! Unfortunately no. I just caught all the bad stuff. It was like a fast forward to the divorce part. I don't even know what I did. I would expect that sort of behavior towards me from Carrie Underwood because she's a tree hugger. Miranda was probably just having a bad day. Hopefully that dream is to be continued.lol

Glad you found him. Kinda sounded like you would. I've found that it is pretty easy to miss the mark by a few feet when not going directly after the shot......especially in low light, waist high cover, or both. Good luck with the dream......hopefully you can reconcile! You know what they say about make-up sex
