40 or 50 gr v-max?

Really depends on the twist of your barrel. Each gun is different and you should shoot both to find out which your gun prefers.
 
With any twist from 9-12 you will shoot either bulllet fine, although as stated you may find your rifle prefers one over the other. The 40's will give you a little more velocity and explosiveness, the 50's will buck wind better and have a higher BC for longer range shots, they will also tend to be a little more fur friendly if you care about that. I usually like something 50-55 grains in my .224 rifles, that seems to be where I find my best accuracy. The exception being a faster 1-7 or 8 twist BBL, in which case I'm looking for a heavier bullet than 50gr.

its a 16" RRA predator pursuit so its got a 1:8 twist.

so the 40 gr are more explosive on critters? i figured the 50 gr would pack more of a punch just because theres more bullet. i guess ill get a box of each and see how they do.
 
With a 1in8 twist I would avoid the 40's. The 50's should stabilize at 223 velocities. I can stabilize a 55 grain in my 1in8 twist 22-250. But I would not try a 40 grain. It might shoot, but 1in8 is pretty fast for 40's.

For coyotes I would use the 50 gr V-Max over the 40 gr V-Max bullets. If I could get them I would choose 55 gr or 60 gr V-max over the 50 gr V-max on coyotes.
 
I tried them all in my .223s and went with the 50g vmax for more punch, velocity means nothing over accuracy to me. 80 some odd coyotes in a few years can say yup I was did in by a 50g vmax!
 
with your 8 twist I would shoot the 50-60 range. I have had great luck with the 53 sierra hp...no more mess than a vmax either.
 
so with a faster twist you want a heavier bullet to stabilize better?

also, a 75gr will have a higher BC than a 55 gr, making it a better choice if i were to do long range shooting right? how would something like a 75 gr perform out of my barrel?
 
Jack, the 75 should shoot great out of your 8 twist barrel.
The only problem might be that you'd need to seat the long bullet deep enough to fit in your mag, and that would use up a lot of space in the case.
But the twist would be just fine, at least it is in my 8 twist bolt gun.
 
we just bought another 1000 rds of the 40 gr. its good ammo, Id say 40 gr only because 50 grain is often sold out. This Fiocchi ammo is top notch, I suggest you buy in bulk while its still cheap.
either will get the job done, youll get a nice splash once in a while.
