Anyone have any experince with Springfeild Armory XDs?
I've been pondering getting a sidearm lately! Looking at a 40 S&W in a 3" or 4" XD.
Thanks ..Tim /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I have a XDSC (3") in 40 S&W. Not sure what you want to know? It functions perfectly with a variety of ammo. I am not a pistol expert but is shoots pretty accurately, better than other 4" autos I have shot. I like the loaded chamber and cocked visable indicators. Recoil is mild and I like the trigger. Everything you want to know here: http://www.hs2000talk.com/

Just bought an XD in 45 GAP. It is sweet handling gun. I have found it to be very accurate. I was interested to try the GAP round. I wish I had bought one in 9mm too. The GAP is some expensive stuff to shoot.

Thanks for the info!
I am a greenhorn when it comes too handguns!
I don't need one, but want one.
What is the typical distance too shoot and what kind of accuracy can I expect? With some practice of course.
Thanks again ......Tim

I have a 40S&W xd tactical and it is my favorite pistol, I have also ordered several others in of rpeople and every one loves them.

Not your "Typical" distance but when Adam, my brother, who has a Sig Pro 2340 and I go out "screwin around" with our pistols, shoot far far away and let me tell you, he can make a man hide and want to keep his head down at 300 yards. Also another cool piece of knowledge about the 40. for a split second, you can actually hear them flat nose bullets comming at you. Yes I walked down range 150 yards and had him fire a few rounds. Now before any of you say how UNSAFE thats is I will say this. He can shoot a pistol damn good, and I trust him with my life, and I was at least 15 yards the the left of target.

Tim, such guns are made for close shooting. Not to say you can't hit further out, but figure if you're a greenhorn like you say, set up a target no further out than five yards. Get your gun hand as high up on the handle as it will go, hold the gun GENTLY in the center of your hand so that the barrel lines up with your forearm bones, and wrap your support hand over the gun hand with the support wrist cranked downwards sharply so your support hand thumb is lined parallel to the barrel. Grip hard with the support hand, weak with the gun hand. Concentrate on getting perfect sight alignment, focus on the top surface of the front sight, and get a gentle slow trigger press straight rearwards (don't be pushing or pulling the gun sideways with your trigger pull) that does not disturb your aim. Try to have the shot come as a surprise every time. When you are putting them all in a big ragged hole, move the target back a few yards and repeat...and repeat...etc. Good sight aligment, focusing on the sights, and a surprise-break trigger press that does not disturb the gun will get you a hit every time.

After a while you'll note your eye automatically goes to the sight as soon as the gun is raised, your press will speed up while still being a surprise, and you'll be able to both shoot quickly and accurately at close range, as well as being able to hit a smaller target further away. Keep your focus on the sights during and after the shot so as to see the gun come down from recoil to its original position which will present you with a sight picture again. This allows fast accurate follow-up shots. Lean your upper body weight slightly forwards into the gun, this helps absorb recoil and helps bring the gun back into alignment more quickly.

Remember, focus on the sights, get perfect sight alignment, don't fire if the alignment is bad, and get that gentle surprise trigger break. No one can hold a gun perfectly steady, so don't let a little gun wobble bother you. However, make sure that the sights are always in as perfect alignment as you can get within the wobble. This way you'll always hit within your wobble pattern. But, if the sights are out of alignment, this means the gun is aiming at a different angle than your eye is looking, which means your hit will be way way off where the gun 'appears' to be aiming.

If you get to the point of shooting a quick double at say 5 yards less than half a second apart, seeing your sights both shots, and hitting more or less center but three or four inches apart, you're doing well enough for defensive purposes. If you can hit a coffee can every shot at 25 yards in slow fire, that's very good too. Of course there is no end to how far you can take your skill beyond that.
You probably want the 4" barrel to start, the longer ones are a little easier to shoot well with a longer sight radius.

You can practice most of this in dry fire, just don't accidentally blow up your TV. ;-) Hope this helps, let us know how it goes.

Good info Colo Pete! Nice crash course in handgun shooting. How available are accessories for the XD now? I looked at one the year it came out, and was discouraged by some seasoned (loyal Glock guys) not to get it, because holsters, tru glo sights, and tac lights weren't available, along with that its a new gun and until proven to be accurate and dependable its guilty. I've heard some great stuff about it on here, and if the "goodies" are easy to get your hands on, i might be interested in buying one too. time to get one and get my CHL renewed here in Tejas!

I made the mistake of following the "sage" advice of Handgun Mag and bought a Steyer M .40 the year those came out. that was a $600 piece of $hit! Extractor malfunctioned at least once per clip, and after a box or so at the range, you could bet i was using a flathead to pull spent shells every other shot, and that was on a good day. sent it off 2x's and ended up getting a brand new one eventually with 2 xtra clips as customer service loyalty, had the same issue with the new one. i traded for a glock asap.

I have a SA-XD in .40 S&W, Service Model, which is the model with the 4" tube. I've had and carried this gun for about two years now and I freakin' love it! I did have one buddy that did have some problems with his about a year ago, and I don't totally blame the gun on this, but Springfield stepped up and made things right to his satisfaction. Mine has performed nearly flawlessly, with just a couple of minor hiccups early on that where completely my fault (shooting very light practice loads in a gun that should have been cleaned well before I tried to get "one more trip to the range" out of it).

WTXHUNTER, Never take anything a "loyal glock guy" says (or anyone who prays exclusively at the temple of glock, sig, beretta, springfield, or whoever for that matter,) at face value. Zealots of any kind kind of scare me. But anyway, there are now a multitude of accessories available for the XD. As many as for the Glocks or a Beretta 92? Of course not, but considering the gun has only been on the market under the Springfield moniker for a few years, it's not surprising. You can get holsters, extra mags, mag carriers, tac lights, glow sights and just about anything else you can imagine. And the selection is only getting bigger. I've even noticed some of the uniformed LEO's I work with carrying the XD in what appear to standard safariland or bianchi duty holsters. Who wudda thunk it? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Tim, I got it typed in less than a day, 'cause I used two fingers, not just one. Plus my trigger finger types pretty fast! ;-)

I have a much more detailed write up in a Word document if you want me to email it to ya.

Have fun and remember the four rules:
1)All guns are ALWAYS loaded
2)Never let the muzzle point at anything you do not wish to destroy
3)Keep your finger off the trigger until your sights are on target
4)Be sure of your target and what is beyond it

Number 2 is especially important with pistols since it is so easy to point them at the the whole world if you are not paying attention.

Colorado Pete,
I too can type with two fingers!!LOL
I am a little slow with my spelin it ain't so good most days!!! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smiliesmack.gif
Anyway thanks for the help. If I'm needen more I will give you a shout!
Now all I need to finish saving my $$$, so the bullets can start flyin.
Latter..........Tim /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif
