.44 Rem Mag???

It is the 44 Rem Mag chambered in a bolt action 77 Ruger rifle. It is a 100 yd and in round that fires 180 to 240gr plus bullets. Accuracy can be good enough for predators at 100 and in with good loads. However, most of these bullets are made for large game like deer, hogs, and such. They are a little heavy to open up on most predators in my opinion.

There are much better choices out there for predator rifles/calibers unless you are just set on a 44.
 
While Dirty Harry says "it'll knock your head off", it's still a pistol round and even a 30-30 has more energy at a distance. Might be a good rifle if you already had a pistol in 44. Sometimes factory shells can be expensive so it's not generally a plinker unless you reload.
 
Its a handgun bullet that they make a rifle to shoot too.Your range will be very limited as like I said its really a handgum caliber.Worthless in MY own opinion.Years ago I saw a fellow try to sight in a rifle at I think 200 yds.He seemed to have trouble.So my dad asked what is that caliber anyway.I recall it was a 357 mag .What a joke that was.LOL If people buy em they will make em.
 
When chambered in a rifle, the .44 Rem Mag is a fine choice for close in deer hunting, in the woods or brush. I own one in a Marlin 1894 lever action carbine and I love it. Since I can't use it to hunt deer in Indiana, I use it as my tree stand coyote rifle. It handles great in a tree stand, and is accurate enough for this purpose. If you want to shoot coyotes at long range though you'd be better off with a more traditional varmint predator chambering.

I have a Ruger 77/44 and totally love it. It is NOT a predator rifle by any means, but I have used it to hunt deer with. The .44 Mag would be a great choice for big game at close range (under 100 yards) and it is accurate enough out of 77/44 at those ranges.
The 77/44 is not being made by Ruger anymore and the magezines for it are somewhat expensive, as well. Good rifle, though. I enjoy mine. (2cents'worth)
 
The 44 mag in the rifle makes a great short range deer killer for someone who can't shoot a handgun. It makes a good backpacking rifle and for hunting big game with treeing hounds. I have killed around 10 deer with the 1894 Marlin in the 44 mag and can't really tell the diff in the killing power between it and the 30-30, which has more energy. Open sighted carbine in 44 mag or 30-30 are easy to pack and will bring home the vension if you shoot them straight. I have never seen the reasoning for a bolt action 44 mag but the 30-30 can show some improvement in the bolt action rifle. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif
 
Just curoius as to why guys feel this is a 100yd and under rifle when many many many guys have taken deer near 100yds out of a 6" barrel handgun?
 
I don't own a rifle in .44 mag. but I do have a 1894 Marlin in .357

I would say that whatever you can do with a handgun in .44 mag. you can add 25 or 30 yds and do fine with the rifle. But with such blunt nosed bullets and comparatively slow muzzle velocity its no "LONG BOMB"!

That said, I do own three 44s and two .41s in round shooters. I like both of these calibers!

Rifle for rifle, a bolt gun in .44 is not the best use of the cartridge. An excellent lever gun like the Marlin is tops!!!!

I have lever guns in .357 and .44 Mag. They are not long range rifles, I have other rifles for that. What they are is FUN! The ballistics are considerably better from even a 16 inch rifle barrel than from any revolver.

In the past I have owned scoped Marlins in both calibers. The 357 was accurate, 2 inch groups at 100 yards were normal. The .44 never shot quite as well, but the deer I shot with it didn't know it.

Buy what you want and enjoy shooting it.
