45-70 brass

Is all 45-70 brass the same?
I guess my question is, is the brass used in factory black powder cartridges ok for reloading smokeless loads, or is it weaker?

No... it is the same if it is current manufacture - if it is older than 100 years, I would not trust it.

I like Starline, I have only used their handgun brass.

Starline's .45-70 brass is excellent quality. That said, be advised that it is a bit thicker than some others (say W-W), and they recommend annealing it before each loading cycle. For BPCR this is significant because Starline's brass will hold slightly less powder than W-W brass will.

I prefer Starline brass for my marlin 1895 45-70 handloads, next favorite is Remington.

My dad uses starline brass for his 45-120. Many reloads on the brass with no annealing.
