45-70??

I've only shot one marlin 45-70 ever. But i have shot that one several times and like someone said before the recoil on this one is tolerable not a rip your shoulder off recoil. Shooting hand loads out of it and she's a shooter for sure. I don't own the gun. My uncle who i shoot with alot and who I learned how to reload from owns it. He loves to shoot and hunt with it. Especially in this part of Arkansas where a 150 yard or more shot don't come often. Now if only I can talk him into letting me hunt with it. I sure plan to pick one up one of these days.

I've had an 18.5 ported guide gun, wow loud!!!!
Sold that for the long barrel cowboy version, everything about it is better
Now they have or did have an 18.5" model of that gun,
and if I didn't already have the other I'd scoop it up in a flash
Worth looking into if you want a slimmer rifle

Really fun guns and if you reload reasonable to shoot
Good luck

I have a 1970s model Marlin with the 22" barrel. I is one of my favorite guns. I hunt thick woods with it and never have wanted a shorter barrel. The shorter barrels are louder, and the shorter ported barrels are quite loud. For many years I have been loading a 300 grain Barns Original soft point in front of Reloader 7. I have taken many deer and hogs with this load. Everything pretty much dropped right there.

I have the Marlin guid gun with the the 18.5 barrel. It is very accurate @ 100 yards. When I was buying it I just made sure it had the jm stamp. The new Marlins aren't nearly as good. I have a Henry in 357 mag and I own a Winchester and by far the Henry is the nicest. Best quality and smoothest by far. The Marlin second.

I wouldn't use the 45-70 on a deer I would take a moose or a bear with it.

Why would you not use the .45-70 on a deer?

I ended up with a Henry all blued 45-70 with a 18.43 inch barrel. I'm pretty stoked. I just hope I get to get it dialed in before we go up Thusday for second season.

I wouldn't use it on deer because the hole it would leave. Unless your shooting a deer behind a tree lol

Let me know how accurate it is. I love my Henry 357 mag but I haven't put enough through it and it's not accurate yet.

I have had way bigger exit holes using my .308 than with my 45-70.

That's interesting I guess that makes sense because it is moving much slower. I just always assumed it would leave a hole through a deer that you could park a bus in.

My experience with my 45-70 on coyotes is it leaves a bigger hole then I would want for a deer. If you want to shoot deer with such an overkill that's fine. But my opinion is its to much for a white tail.

Coyotes aren't as thick as deer. It doesn't usually blow a fist sized hole in them like you may think. I would be more worried about all the hunters using 300 Win Mags than the slow, heavy .45-70.

My 270 with 130 grain Ballistic Tips at about 3000 fps damages more meat than my 45/70 with a 300 grain Barnes Original at 2000 fps.

Hey friend, I'm not trying to be a smartazz, but you're talking about something you have no experience with. Shooting a 35 lb. coyote and a 165 lb. buck just isn't the same thing. Using a 420 gr. hard cast bullet at 1,600 fps allows you to dang near eat right up to the bullet hole. I've used that load, 400 gr. Speer soft points, 405 gr. Remington soft points, 350 gr. Hornady Interlocks and 300 gr. Winchester hollow points. Velocities ran from 1,600 fps upwards of 1,900 fps. Shoot a few deer with your .45-70, it's a hoot and not nearly as destructive as you theorize.

I was concerned about the quality of the Marlins as well. I purchased an 1895 GBL in 45/70 four years back. Fit and finish on the rifle is just ok. It shoots great however. The newer ones that are coming out of the factory now are much better I've heard. I use mine for my bear gun. I shoot 405gr Buffalo Bore rds out of mine. Topped with a Leupold Vx-III 1.5 X 5 scope.
