I recently purchased a .45 colt rifle, and am having trouble finding much ballistics data on the round in a rifle, plenty of info for pistol but not much for rifle's. anyone have any opinions on effective range, for taking coyotes or deer?
 
75 to 100 yards. I have a Marlin rifle in 44 Mag and the two rounds are not much differant in exterior ballistics. Makes a fair deer or hog gun in close cover, tears up yotes big time though.
 
P.S. Before the Casull guys start I know the 45 colt pistol is capible of higher velosity than the 44 Mag with heavier bullets. But facts are still facts nither have sufficient BC to travel accuratly much past 100 Yards even in a rifle. A flat point bullet is still a flat point bullet like trying to pass a basket ball.
 
That depends on the rifle and what kind of bullets you load in it, I get over 1900fps MV with the 250gr Hornady SST using Hodgdon Ruger/FA +P Lil'gun 250gr XTP data.

I just got a reloading press and am still waiting on dies and a few other things and plan on reloading the .45 but for now I am just shooting winchester 250 gr factory loads. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif
 
new to this not yet begun reloading, heres a question reloading a .45 colt looking at bullets ranging from .451 to .454 how do you know which ones to use? and y do they range?
 
Those that shoot the best!! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif Typically, .452" jacketed would work best. You can slug the bore with a #8 soft lead egg sinker to determine the best size for cast bullets, .001-.002" larger than the groove diameter usually works for the best accuracy.

ok heres some more questions, looking at reloading data I find .45 colt and .45 colt-ruger & contender what is the difference? is there a difference in modern firearms or is this just for older firearms?
 
The loads for the Contender and .45colt-ruger are hotter loads. Whatever you do don't shoot those loads in handguns that are not Super Redhawks or Contenders. If you do you might blow the gun apart.
