.450 marlin optics help

I've decided to put a scope on my Marlin 1895 chambered in .450 Marlin. My budget is 200 max, cheaper is better. A red dot scope is fine with me, or my other option is a scout style scope(I'm mounting it on a scout style rail mount, so I need the extended eye relief). Any recommendations on anything? Is there anything out there under 200 that will hold up to the recoil, and hold it's zero?

I have very little experience with scout scopes.

What I can tell you, is if you go red-dot, you need to shell out some coin to get one that will repeatedly hold up to the recoil of that rifle. I have seen more than one red-dot destroyed by big bore leverguns.....

I have the Leupold 2.5x Scout Scope (Burris is a little cheaper and equally positive reviews) on my Marlin 336 30-30 for woods deer hunting and I love it. I'm able to shoot with both eyes open and it works well with moving shots.

What works with a 30-30 may not work with a 450. I can say this without any doubt. You are talking 3X or more recoil energy with a 450. Personally, I'd just buy a Leupold and sleep easy.

I'm not sure about the Weaver question. As I said, I'm not too familiar with scout scopes. But I'm VERY familiar with big-bore leverguns......

I was kind of figuring the recoil would be an issue with the cheaper stuff. I'm going to have to look used, as the budget is kind of tight currently.

Borden811, I have a Leupold 2-7x33 VX II on my 444 Marlin and it holds up to the recoil real good. The Leupold ran $300 and was worth every cent, A cheaper scope most likely will not hold up to the heavy recoil of your 450. If you buy a $200 scope that takes a dump from recoil, you could have spent just $100 more and had a scope that worked great, now your $200 scope is broke and you go spend $300 for the Leupold that you should have bought the first time. Good Luck on your choice, and enjoy your 450 Marlin,----Riflemann

If you still have good eyes, iron sights work.
Hy-Viz makes some great sights.
Maybe some ghost sights.
I like peep sights on my lever rifles or maybe a tang sight.
Iron sights work in the rain, snow and fog.
The batteries do not go bad in cold weather.
Cost would be under $100.

I've already got a set of Williams sights on it, ghost ring in the back, white blade in the front. I like them, but I want a scope on it too...
