48 Pound Desert Coyote! ~Pics~

Buster and I were at it early today, and the first coyote shot was a real heavyweight for a desert coyote!

He weighed in at 48 pounds!

The scales have a washer type indicator that shows the weight of the coyote. Weighed him twice just to be sure. Same weight both times.

He looks like he's been laying out in the sun and is bloated up, but these pics were made right after he was shot this morning in cool weather.

What's the biggest/heaviest coyote you guys get? Down in the desert here, a big coyote will go a tad over 30 pounds, and in the mountains a really big coyote will tip the scales at 40 pounds...

A 48 pounder in the flats is unheard of.

Feel free to post pics of your "big boys"...(I know you eastern hunters have some bigger ones to show.)

Thanks for looking!

That is one fat coyote! Did he waddle up to your setup?
It would've been a nasty job, but it would be interesting to see if he had gorged on an opportunistic food source or if he was actually fat.

Barry,
Did you check his stomach contents?

Looks like he had just finished a meal.

Ol' Buster the Schnauzer cracks me up. If I used my wife's miniature Schnauzer for a decoy there would be "beep" to pay.

My biggest to date is 42 pounds.

It was RANK! All sorts of contents that indicate road kill and garbage feeding. Nothing like ripe roadkill out of a coyote to make you hungry for some bisquits & gravy first thing in the morning....

I think I'll lay off the Feta cheese for awhile too.

Circa 2001 my Dad hit one with the 25-06 that weighed 61lbs. We were too poor for cameras at that time so no photos, I know credibility. So far my largest have been 30lbs out here in California. Adam

That's a big desert dog Barry. Congrats.

Wish I had scales when I killed mine. Everybody that picked it up said about 50lbs. I know he felt like 100lbs by the time I got him to the truck, LOL. He was a young coyote too. The farmer said there were bigger ones on his place.

Nice going. Be a pretty safe bet there is/was a carcass of some animal he has been having his way with. At least all the rabbits were safe while he was in the overstuffed condition. Ain't no way he coulda caught one.

Biggest I've killed that actually got put on an accurate scale went 41 if I remember right. He looked very similar to yours and had been feeding on a cow carcass. I think I've killed a few slightly heavier, but never a scale around to verify it.

That thing looks huge Barry!

The Government ADC Trapper from this area many years ago told me that he had taken over 2000 coyotes from this area and the heaviest coyote that he weighed was 38 lbs.

Most of the coyotes I get I would guess to be between 20 lbs and 30 lbs.

One time I drove up on a dead cow that I didn't know was there and I saw a bunch of Ravens take off and 4 coyotes running away from the dead cow. I jumped out of my truck and got my rifle on one of the coyotes and it looked like the coyote was running in slow motion. I shot the coyote and when I walked up to check it out, it was obvious that it was a 25 lb coyote with 10 lbs of beef in it's belly.

Nice one Rockinbar! Most of mine run low to mid thirties range. The occasional one hits the upper thirties and once in a great while one tops forty pounds. I've seen one in the last decade I felt was a legitimate fifty pounder. I called him King Kong Coyote. One thing is for sure though, until you get a decent scale and really weigh them you can sure get fooled. Sorta like fishing... it's more fun talking about the big one without a scale handy!

Barry I was already to call BS on you until I looked at the photos.

Methinks he's every bit as big as your scale says it was. Hope you didn't have to haul him very far. Heaviest coyote I've weighed up here was 38 lbs. I did kill one quite a bit bigger a few years ago, but didn't think to weigh him at the time. Wish I would have.

This coyote was 41 pounds on a digital scale and is the largest I have weighed. I have weighed a good many in the 35-38 pound range.

This one would have looked even bigger if it had been later in the year and not a summer coat.

When you weigh them, they are never as heavy as you though they were going to be.

This one wasn't huge and I didn't weigh it or cut into it, but it looked like it had swallowed a football. I was tempted to cut it open to see what it was, but decided not to.

He sure looks well fed!

Heres my biggest. Weighted 55lbs after I skinned it. Big deer killer. I'm 5'10" and that coyote was 72" after I skinned it.
