I was reading 223 chambered you shouldn't shoot 5.56 ammo. But 5.56 chambered you can shoot 223 is this true? If this is a stupid question please forgive me I've followed a bird dog and bassfished my whole life up until now.
You got it right. Most 5.56 ammo would probably be alright in most .223 chambers, they are that close to each other, but they ARE different cartridges. It is possible to have safety (pressure) problems by shooting 5.56 out of a .223.
There are hundreds of millions or rounds shot in the opposite chamber every year and I have never heard of anybody encountering any problems. Except for the throat length the differences are less than the tolerances allowed in the chambers.

Bushmaster says on their guns .223 5.56 nato. i would assume that means you can shoot either out of that gun
without problems?
Bushmaster doesn't make a ".223" chambered rifle. All Bushmasters are 5.56NATO, and will safely shoot either round. They may be stamped with both calibers for clarification and to avoid confusion.

SAAMI, the Sporting Arms and Ammunition Manufacturers Institute says never to use 5.56 Nato ammo in a 223 chamber, it's listed on their Unsafe Arms and Ammunition Combinations page. Unsafe Arms and Ammunition Combinations
