5.56 ammo?

Looking to buy 500/1000 rounds of 5.56 ammo just to plink and to have around

What brand name would you buy or stick with?

I found Winchester 62 grain green tip 1000 rounds for $425, but looking for cheap
 
Stay away from the green tipped. A lot of ranges will not let you shoot it. You can buy the 55 gr FMJ for less than that.
 
Palmetto State Armory has a good sale on some 5.56, it also has the Lake City brass which is great for reloading. They've been running some pretty decent sales... maybe 300 bucks for a thousand rounds with free shipping
 
Midway had xm193 on sale for $109 for 420 rounds with free shipping
It will go on sale again.

What is wrong with a 5.56 for home defense?

As you and I know, there's nothing wrong with the .223/5.56 carbine for home defense if the proper bullet type is selected.

Hence my question, GC.

IMO...a pistol is only used to get to your rifle.

And, in most cases, shotguns are poor choices in an occupied dwelling...completely dependant upon load used.

In an occupied dwelling or with houses close by a rifle may not be the best choice if wall penetration could be an issue. Ammo is going to be a big factor. My personal preference in my house would be a shotgun or pistol at the ranges that most home defense would be needed.

In penetration tests, pistols and shotguns routinely out penetrated high-velocity rifle rounds. Below is a link with several reputable sources of penetration tests. Pistol rounds are terrible about over-penetrating dwelling materials.

Just something for you to ponder but local swat uses Winchester 40gr Ballistic tips in their 10.5" and 16" "M4's".
Main reason why is the risk of over penetration.
All the guys that use them say they wont ever use their MP5s again. There is no comparison on a 40gr Ballistic tip vs a 124gr Winchester Ranger on a bad guy.
