50# East Texas Coyote (story and pics)

Took a friend out hunting today, and had a great time. Our morning hunt went pretty good by East Texas standards. We made four or five stands and called in two coyotes and killed one. On our first stand of the evening we called in a huge coyote. I was just getting the camera on him when Jerry shot. He was huge. After that we made a couple of more stands, but the wind had picked up quit a bit, and we had no takers. We took the coyotes back to my shop and weighed the big one. a whopping 50#s.

Heres the pictures.

My wife just looked over my shoulder, and said "That's a big dog, where did they get him?", I looked at the location and said Texas.

She said "Well duh, every things big in Texas!"

Good job!

hi BYRON, i've just ordered your video this morning. hopefully it will help my unproven skills a little. i hunt in PADUCAH TEXAS about 60 miles south of vernon and there are a lot of open fields, would you suggest placing my remote control caller in the middle of the field or on the edge of it near the tree line?
sam
thanks

Thanks guys. We weighed him several times and he weighed btween 49-52#s everytime.

Thanks for the order hgambler98,
I hunt quite a bit not far from Paducah. Mostly around Quanah and Crowell. If I'm calling a wheat field I'll usually set it a few yards from the edge beside a decoy. If you walk out in the middle, or very far out you run the risk of being seen by a coyote watching the field. I let the lay of the land, and the wind direction determine where I want the caller. If I can I want the coyote to have to go out in the field or some type of clearing to get downwind.

Thanks again and Good Hunting

WOW  That thing is, well, big

Had a gal once that told me the same thing.....
She was talkin' about my bar-b-que, I had got me one o' them big ones from K-Mart, I knew right then I was in love... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Thanks for the evidence that Texas does not have just skinny 30lb coyotes. I have told people for years that we get coyotes over 50 lbs occassionally. I saw a picture of one taken in the Weimar area that was 54 lbs.

A good friend of mine has recorded, in his journal, the statistics (sex, age, weight) on almost every dog he has taken over the years(1500+). He will tell you that the heaviest dog he has taken was 47 lbs with the average being around the mid thirties. He hunts mostly west Texas from Abilene to the Pan Handle area.

Hey Gerald, That friend wouldn't be Wyman Meinzer would it. I hunt the same areas from Abilene up into the Panhandle. I have shot some coyotes up there that would go around 50#s as well. We shot one last year that is on my video that would surely go close to 50# if not a little more.(the one that Buckey Elkins head shoots). I've noticed that the East Texas coyotes on average outway the West Texas coyote a little. I've got scales in my truck now and plan to keep a detailed journal for this year.

Congrats to you and your buddy on that huge coyote! Byron what calls/sounds did you use on this hunt ?
Jeb

Thanks Jeb,
I used the FOXPRO playing the old rabbit #1. He came out of a pine thicket out into the edge of the field. I had the FOXPRO setting in a finger of brush that ran out into the field. He came to the edge, stoped to get a look, and Jerry poped him. He never knew we were there.

Thanks Sam,

Could I get you to tell that to Bass Pro, and while your at it also tell Cabellas /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif .

That was fast. I just looked at your order and it went out yesterday. We ship priority mail and they usually get delivered anywhere in the US in no more than a couple of days.

Glad you liked it.

Speaking of which Byron have you ever tried to get Cabela's or Bass Pro to sell your videos? I know they sell Randy Anderson's vids at Cabela's. You should try and get them to buy soom, you could make a fair bit of $ (i think).

HunterTay,
Yes I have. just been getting the run around. They will take it sooner or later. Maybe you could all write them letters and asked them why they don't carry it. Lots of letters /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif .
I have it in Gander Mountain, Sportsmans Warehouse and lots of other smaller stores.

You can also get them through All Predator Calls .com, and Game Calls. net. They are both sponsors or advertisers that support PM.

Thanks and Good Hunting

Gonna go wright Cabela's a letter right now. Rather actually send them an e-mail. And hurry up with your second video, lol. Maybe you could put the footage of the black yote in there?

Thanks Foreman,

Vol.II should be out sometime in May. Got lots of great footage already.

Happy Holidays and Good Hunting

BYRON, make sure to include some footage of the stands you are hunting from in the new video( surrounding area of the stand), i know one of the managers at the basspro shop in grapevine, tx. i'll mention your tape and offer to let him see it if he shows any interest.
take care
