55's and 243's

Is it normal for a 243 with a factory barrel, to not shoot 55gr nolser's. MIne shoots them great, but another site i visit had people complaining they couldn't get them to shoot. Mine are .75in or better at 100yds, and about 5in at 300yds.

They were saying that they wouldn't stabilize?? That doesn't make sense. Can you over stablize a bullet??? Just curious, i have had nothing but good with all the reloading i have done.
 
I didn't fool with but one box of nos bal tips and could only get 1 1/2" out
of them so I quit. If loaded up hot I would guess they are quite hard on the
barrel. Sure do turn the air pink on squirrels under a 100 though.

Yeah me too. My Ruger Number 1 will clover leaf at 100 yards with this bullet. And this at 4000 fps too.
 
I'm close shooting Hornady 58 grain VMax in my Douglas Premium barreled Mauser. It regularly prints half inch groups at 100 yards and performs exceptionally well on coyotes out to 400 yards.
 
I don't know if I am just lucky but my Rem. 700 VLS shoot 55's all the way up to 105"s one inch or less. I use Varget in all loads and adjust seating depth accordingly.

In the 243's and 6mm Rem's that I have had, the 55-62g bulles all shot quite well, usually with tiny groups using
Win 760 and a Fed 210 primer.

The 60g Sierra is a much tougher bullet than the Nosler 55 and the Hornady 58 V Max, and will kill coyotes shot from any angle.

The Hydrostatic shock produced by the Sierra 60 is so great that you can shoot coyotes in the rear of the stomach and they are still laying there grave yard dead...quite a testimony for any caliber.

What is wierd about shooting these really fast loads is that you don't hear the WHOP until the animal is on the other side of 300 yards...can't say about the 55's and 58's.

When Sierra was in Santa Fe Springs, CA, the head ballistician told me that the .243 60g HP was one of the most accurate bullets of all they made, according to their testing.

After hearing this, I went home and tried the sierra 60's in my benchrest rifle, 6 PPC. I did not fire a group that was larger than .285 while working up loads for the 60 and shot three groups that were in the very low 1's. Needless to say, I keep a lot of these bullets on hand.

Thanks guys. I like mine, haven't got the chronographed, but the are well pushed. Have shot crows, and they are a black mist of feathers. I thought my 204 was wicked,but the 243 is better.
 
204Gunner, you may get exits depending on the angle. Exits were never huge unless a bone ripped though the side that was a secondary projectile.

Word of caution, don't think that any large centerfire is hide friendly on foxes.
 
Thanks Ackleyman! Now I wonder if that bullet is a better choice than the 85 gameking bthp. Will have to run the numbers and see which is flatter I guess.
 
I couldn't get 55s to shoot in either of my Savage 243s. 70s do one ragged hole so I haven't gone back to try and find a good 55gr load.
 
In my opinion the 55's and close are just stupid and restrict the effectiveness of the cartridge. Big numbers on chrono screen at 10 feet dont impress me. 70 grain and above is needed in 243, I prefer the 100 grain, as my 243 is a LONG range predator gun, not a gun that is flat for 300 yards and then falls on its face.
my 223 and 22-250 are good for that.

Take a look at the 55grain and see how fast it sheds velocity and energy. Almost all heavier bullets will have more energy and velocity at mid to longer ranges than a 55 gr.At 400yds a 70 grain lauched at 3700 feet will be 400 fps faster and almost twice the energy of a 55 grain at 4000 muzzle velocity.Keep the 55 grain in the 22 centerfires where the belong!!!In a 6mm they are just smoke and mirrors.
 
55's are all my .243 will shoot. I bought the gun off of my dad because he couldn't get it to pattern 70,80,100gr bullets as a deer gun. After some research, I found it had a McGowen custom barrel on it and it only likes 55gr Ballistic Tips with 43g of Varget. She's a flat shooter...but not fur friendly at all. Never once had a spinner or lost coyote from it.

If a guy wanted to shoot 55's why wouldn't you just get a .224 centerfire..Not looking for flame's..My comment isn't directed @ the last poster..Or anybody..

Just "sayin"
